Frequently asked questions

The Cape Town temperature market dashboard on Polymarket tracks real-time odds and trading activity for predictions on the highest temperature in Cape Town on June 17. Traders buy and sell shares based on whether they believe the day's peak temperature will fall at or below 14°C or exceed that threshold. The dashboard displays current odds, historical price movements, and 24-hour trading volume, giving you a live snapshot of how the market is pricing this weather outcome. This transparency lets you monitor shifting sentiment as new meteorological data emerges and compare your own forecast against the collective prediction.

Prediction market odds reflect the aggregated beliefs of traders with real money at stake, whereas traditional weather forecasts come from meteorological models and expert analysis. This market prices the likelihood of a high of 14°C or below on the specified date, offering a market-based probability that often incorporates information faster than official forecasts update. Comparing the two can reveal where consensus diverges—if traders are pricing a much higher or lower chance than meteorologists suggest, it may signal either market inefficiency or emerging data that hasn't yet reached mainstream forecasts. Both perspectives are valuable for forming a complete picture of the expected outcome.

On Polymarket, traders set the odds by buying and selling shares in two competing outcomes: that the highest temperature will be 14°C or below, or that it will exceed 14°C. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each share reflects the market's collective probability estimate, with the two sides always summing to 100%. As new information arrives—updated weather models, seasonal patterns, or real-time atmospheric data—traders adjust their positions, moving the price up or down. This continuous repricing mechanism ensures the odds stay aligned with current market sentiment and available evidence.

This market resolves around Jun 17, 2026, once June 17 has passed and the day's highest temperature in Cape Town can be verified. The outcome is determined by comparing the recorded peak temperature against the 14°C threshold, with the result confirmed once credible public reporting is available. Traders holding shares in the winning outcome receive their payout, while the losing side expires worthless. The resolution process is straightforward and objective, hinging entirely on whether the actual high meets or falls short of the specified benchmark.

Several factors can shift odds before resolution. Updated seasonal weather models or long-range forecasts showing warmer or cooler patterns will prompt traders to adjust positions. Real-time atmospheric conditions—pressure systems, ocean temperatures, or wind patterns—often trigger repricing as meteorological data streams in. Major weather events or anomalies in the Southern Hemisphere could also influence sentiment. Additionally, historical temperature records for Cape Town in mid-June and any unusual climate patterns may attract trader attention. As the date approaches, intraday forecasts become more precise, typically narrowing uncertainty and stabilizing prices closer to the actual outcome.
