Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Cape Town temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and historical price movements for predictions on the highest temperature recorded in Cape Town on June 15. Traders buy and sell shares representing different temperature ranges, and the dashboard displays current probabilities for each outcome alongside 24-hour trading volume and cumulative liquidity. This live data reflects the collective forecast of market participants as they respond to weather models, seasonal patterns, and incoming meteorological updates.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader sentiment and incentivize accuracy through financial stakes. While meteorological agencies publish deterministic point forecasts and confidence intervals based on numerical models, this market aggregates the distributed knowledge of traders who profit only if their bets prove correct. Comparing the implied probabilities here to official forecasts from South Africa's weather service can reveal where the market is pricing in additional uncertainty or confidence relative to expert consensus.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that sets odds based on the ratio of shares held in each outcome bucket. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders deposit collateral, purchase shares representing their chosen temperature range, and the price adjusts dynamically as the balance between outcomes shifts. Higher trading volume typically narrows spreads and improves price discovery, allowing the market to reflect new weather data and model updates more efficiently as June 15 approaches.

This market resolves around Jun 15, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Cape Town on that date becomes verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the final temperature reading against the predefined outcome brackets offered in the market. Traders holding shares in the correct range receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless, incentivizing accurate forecasting throughout the prediction window.

Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases will likely drive significant price swings. El Niño or La Niña developments, ocean temperature anomalies, and high-pressure systems over southern Africa can all influence June conditions. Additionally, as the event date draws closer, improved model consensus and any unusual weather events in the weeks prior will prompt traders to adjust positions, creating volatility in implied probabilities across temperature ranges.
