Frequently asked questions

The Cape Town temperature market dashboard on Polymarket tracks real-time odds and trading activity for predictions about the highest temperature in Cape Town on July 13. Traders buy and sell shares based on their forecasts, with prices reflecting the collective probability of different temperature outcomes. The dashboard displays current odds, historical price movements, and trading volume, giving you a live snapshot of how the market is pricing this specific weather event. You can monitor how sentiment shifts as new weather data or forecasts emerge.

Prediction market odds aggregate the views of many traders with real money at stake, often capturing information faster than traditional weather forecasts. While meteorologists rely on physics-based models and historical data, this market reflects traders' collective assessment of those same inputs plus any breaking weather patterns. The two approaches typically converge, but prediction markets can diverge when traders spot emerging signals—such as unexpected atmospheric shifts—before they appear in official forecasts. Comparing the odds here to your local weather service provides a useful cross-check on temperature expectations.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that converts trader activity into real-time odds. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome—such as whether the high will reach a specific temperature threshold—has its own share price between 0 and 100 cents, where the price directly represents the implied probability. As traders buy or sell shares, the price adjusts automatically. Higher prices mean the market views that outcome as more likely; lower prices suggest less confidence. This continuous repricing ensures the odds stay aligned with current sentiment.

This market resolves around Jul 13, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Cape Town for that day is confirmed. The outcome is verified against credible public sources to determine which temperature bracket or threshold was actually reached. Until that point, traders can continue to buy and sell shares as new weather data emerges. Resolution is automatic once the event occurs and the data is finalized, settling all open positions based on the verified result.

Several factors can shift odds in this market before July 13. Updated seasonal weather forecasts, changes in atmospheric pressure systems, or unexpected climate patterns could prompt traders to reassess temperature expectations. Real-time weather alerts or shifts in the jet stream may trigger rapid repricing. Additionally, historical temperature records for that date or time of year can influence trader behavior. As the event date approaches, intraday weather updates and live conditions will likely drive the most volatile price swings, especially in the final hours before resolution.
