Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Cape Town temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and trading activity for contracts tied to the highest temperature recorded in Cape Town on July 11. Traders buy and sell shares reflecting their belief about whether the peak temperature will hit specific thresholds. The dashboard displays current prices, historical price movements, and liquidity metrics, allowing participants to monitor how market sentiment shifts as new weather data and forecasts emerge. This gives you a live window into crowd-sourced expectations for that day's weather outcome.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior and risk appetite alongside expert models. While weather analysts publish deterministic temperature ranges based on atmospheric data, this market aggregates the collective judgment of participants who have financial incentive to be accurate. Comparing the implied probability from current odds to published forecasts from regional weather services can reveal where the crowd sees upside or downside risk. Both sources offer value: analysts provide technical depth, while markets reflect dynamic consensus under uncertainty.

On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker that adjusts odds based on buy and sell pressure. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each contract represents a specific temperature outcome, and the price of a share reflects the implied probability that outcome will occur. As traders place orders, the pool rebalances, moving prices up or down. This continuous pricing mechanism ensures liquidity and allows participants to enter or exit positions at transparent, market-determined rates throughout the trading window.

This market resolves around Jul 11, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Cape Town on July 11 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the actual peak temperature reported by official weather monitoring stations against the contract thresholds. Once the event date passes and data is confirmed, the market settles automatically based on which temperature band the final reading falls into. Traders holding the correct outcome receive their payout.

Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases can all shift odds significantly. Tropical systems, cold fronts, or heat waves affecting southern Africa will prompt traders to reassess probabilities. Media coverage of extreme weather events elsewhere may also influence risk sentiment. As July 11 approaches, intraday weather updates and satellite imagery become more precise, often triggering sharp repricing. Geopolitical or climate-related news affecting regional weather patterns could also trigger trading activity in this market.
