Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Cape Town temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and historical price movements for this prediction market centered on the highest temperature recorded in Cape Town on July 10. Traders buy and sell shares reflecting their forecasts of whether the peak temperature will fall within specific ranges. Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they aggregate diverse trader beliefs and incentives in real time. While weather analysts rely on numerical models and historical data to project conditions, this market incorporates forward-looking sentiment from participants who profit or lose based on accuracy. Over time, prediction markets have proven competitive with or superior to single-model forecasts, especially when traders have access to the same underlying data and strong financial motivation to correct mispricings.

On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker (AMM) mechanism where buying or selling shares shifts the odds in real time. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome range has an associated price reflecting the collective probability estimate. As new information emerges—updated forecasts, seasonal patterns, or real-time weather developments—traders adjust their positions, causing prices to move. This continuous repricing ensures the market reflects the latest available intelligence about July 10 conditions in Cape Town.

This market resolves around Jul 10, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Cape Town on that date becomes verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the actual peak temperature against the predefined outcome ranges offered in the market. Resolution occurs after the day concludes and official meteorological data is published, at which point traders' positions settle according to which range the final temperature falls into.

Updated weather forecasts from meteorological agencies are the primary catalyst for price movement in this market. Seasonal climate patterns, ocean temperature anomalies, and atmospheric pressure systems affecting the Southern Hemisphere can shift trader expectations. Real-time weather alerts, changes in forecast confidence, and historical temperature comparisons for July 10 in prior years all influence positioning. As the event date approaches, intraday weather developments and final model consensus typically drive the most volatile repricing.
