Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader sentiment and broader information flows beyond official weather models. While meteorologists publish deterministic or probabilistic temperature ranges based on atmospheric science, this market aggregates the collective judgment of traders who may weigh additional factors—seasonal patterns, historical anomalies, or emerging climate signals. Comparing the implied probability from market prices to the confidence intervals published by weather agencies can reveal where traders are pricing in more or less uncertainty than experts, making such comparisons valuable for understanding market expectations relative to institutional forecasts.
On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker or order-book mechanism, with each contract representing a specific temperature range or threshold for Busan on June 17. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Prices fluctuate based on buy and sell pressure; as traders become more confident in a particular outcome, they bid up the corresponding contract, pushing its price higher and the implied probability upward. The spread between bid and ask prices reflects liquidity and uncertainty, tightening as the event date approaches and more information becomes available to the market.
This market resolves around Jun 17, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Busan on that date is verified against credible public sources. The outcome is determined by the official meteorological data reported for the city, ensuring an objective and independently verifiable result. Traders holding contracts aligned with the confirmed temperature outcome receive their payout, while misaligned positions expire worthless. The resolution process typically occurs within hours of the market end time, once the data is finalized and published by relevant weather authorities.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, or unexpected atmospheric systems approaching the Korean peninsula could significantly move odds in this market. Real-time meteorological alerts, changes in ocean temperatures, or anomalous pressure systems may trigger trader repositioning as new information becomes available. Historical temperature records for Busan in mid-June also serve as a reference point; traders may adjust positions if comparable years show unusual heat or cooling trends. As June 17 approaches, each new official forecast update or satellite imagery typically prompts repricing, with the most volatile moves often occurring in the final 48 hours before the event.
