Frequently asked questions

The Beijing temperature market dashboard on Polymarket tracks real-time odds and trading activity for the highest temperature forecast in Beijing on June 17. Traders buy and sell shares based on their predictions of whether the day's peak temperature will reach specific thresholds. The interface displays current market prices, historical price movements, and trading volume, allowing participants to monitor how consensus expectations shift as new weather data and forecasts emerge. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the prediction market community.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior and incentives. While meteorologists rely on atmospheric models and historical data, this market aggregates the beliefs of participants who have financial skin in the game. Traders may react faster to updated satellite imagery or model runs, causing odds to shift before official forecasts are revised. Comparing the implied probability in this market to published forecasts from national weather services can reveal where market participants see greater or lower confidence than institutional predictions.

On Polymarket, traders set the odds by buying and selling shares that represent different temperature outcomes. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each share costs between 0 and 1 cent, and the current market price reflects the probability that traders assign to each outcome. When more traders believe the highest temperature will hit a particular level, demand for those shares increases, pushing the price higher. The inverse holds when confidence declines, creating a continuous price discovery mechanism that balances supply and demand throughout the trading period.

This market resolves around Jun 17, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Beijing on June 17 is verified and confirmed. The outcome is determined by comparing actual meteorological data against the temperature thresholds embedded in the market's contract terms. Once the event day passes and credible public reporting confirms the final temperature reading, the market settles automatically based on which outcome bracket the verified figure falls into. Traders holding winning shares receive their payout proportional to the final odds.

Several factors can shift odds in this market before Jun 17, 2026. Updated weather models and seasonal forecasts may indicate stronger or weaker heat patterns approaching Beijing. Real-time atmospheric data, jet stream positioning, and moisture levels influence trader confidence in temperature predictions. Major weather events—such as unexpected cold fronts or heat domes—can trigger rapid repricing. Additionally, as June 17 approaches, historical temperature records and long-range climate patterns may be reassessed, causing traders to adjust their positions and move the market price in response to refined expectations.
