Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because traders incorporate real-time data, historical patterns, and their own risk assessments into prices. While meteorologists publish point estimates and confidence intervals, this market aggregates the beliefs of many independent traders making financial commitments. Comparing the implied probability from market odds to the confidence level in official forecasts can reveal where traders are more or less bullish than experts. This divergence is particularly useful when forecasters express uncertainty; traders may price in tail risks or consensus shifts that haven't yet appeared in published models.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker (AMM) system. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature range has its own contract, and the cost to buy a share reflects the current probability assigned to that outcome. As more traders bet on higher or lower temperatures, the price adjusts in real time. The sum of all outcome probabilities equals 100%, so if one range becomes more expensive, others become cheaper. This continuous repricing mechanism ensures the market stays efficient and responsive to new weather information.
This market resolves around Jul 8, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Beijing on that date becomes verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing actual recorded temperatures against the predefined ranges offered in the market. Traders holding shares in the correct outcome receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. Resolution happens automatically once the data is confirmed, ensuring all participants see the same final result.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases can all move prices significantly. If meteorological agencies issue heat warnings or revise their outlooks upward or downward, traders will reprice accordingly. Unexpected weather systems, changes in solar activity, or anomalies in regional air circulation can also trigger volatility. Historical temperature records for early July in Beijing serve as a benchmark; any new climate data or model consensus changes will influence trader positioning. Watch for official forecast updates and any extreme weather alerts in the days leading up to July 8.
