Frequently asked questions

The Beijing temperature prediction market dashboard on Polymarket tracks real-time odds and trading activity for the highest temperature forecast in Beijing on July 6. Traders buy and sell shares based on their belief about whether the peak temperature will reach specific thresholds. The interface displays current market prices, historical price movements, and trading volume, allowing participants to monitor how sentiment shifts as new weather data and forecasts emerge. This live pricing mechanism reflects the collective expectations of the prediction market community.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior and financial incentives. While meteorologists rely on atmospheric models and historical data, this market aggregates the distributed knowledge of participants who have skin in the game. Traders may price in uncertainty, tail risks, or recent model updates faster than official forecasts update. Comparing the implied probability from market odds to the confidence levels published by weather services can reveal where market participants see additional risk or opportunity relative to expert consensus.

On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker system. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome—such as whether the highest temperature will be 38°C—has a price between 0 and 100 cents, representing the implied probability. As traders place orders, the price adjusts to balance supply and demand. The current market price reflects the collective belief of all participants about the likelihood of that specific temperature outcome occurring on July 6.

This market resolves around Jul 6, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Beijing for July 6 is finalized and verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the actual peak temperature against the specific thresholds defined in each contract. Traders who correctly predicted the temperature range receive their winnings, while incorrect positions expire worthless. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the market end date, once official temperature data is published and confirmed.

Major weather model updates and seasonal forecasts can significantly shift odds as traders reassess the probability of extreme heat. Real-time atmospheric conditions, including high-pressure systems or heat waves affecting East Asia, often trigger sharp price movements. Climate anomalies, El Niño or La Niña patterns, and historical temperature records for early July in Beijing all serve as reference points. Breaking news about unusual weather patterns or unexpected meteorological developments can also prompt rapid repricing as participants adjust their positions based on new information.
