Frequently asked questions

The Austin temperature prediction market dashboard on Polymarket tracks real-time odds and trading activity for the highest temperature forecast in Austin on July 12. Traders buy and sell shares based on their expectations of whether the peak temperature will fall within specific ranges. The interface displays current market prices, historical price movements, and 24-hour trading volume, giving participants a live view of how the crowd is pricing different temperature outcomes. This data helps traders monitor shifting sentiment and identify potential value as new information emerges leading up to the event.

Prediction market odds reflect the aggregated beliefs of traders with real money at stake, often diverging from traditional weather analyst forecasts. While meteorologists rely on physics-based models and historical data, this market prices in trader conviction and incorporates breaking information in real time. Analyst forecasts tend to be more conservative and model-driven, whereas market odds can shift sharply on new data or changing trader sentiment. Comparing the two reveals whether the crowd is more bullish or bearish on extreme heat than official forecasts suggest, offering a complementary perspective on July 12's likely conditions.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that converts trader buy and sell orders into real-time odds for each temperature outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders purchase shares representing their chosen temperature range, and the price of each share reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more capital flows into one outcome, its price rises and others fall, creating a continuous price discovery mechanism. This design incentivizes accurate predictions while allowing traders to enter or exit positions at any time before resolution.

This market resolves around Jul 12, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Austin on July 12 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the official peak temperature reading against the specific ranges offered in the market. Traders who correctly predicted the temperature band receive their winnings, while incorrect positions expire worthless. Resolution is typically finalized within hours of the event, allowing traders to see results and settle positions quickly.

Weather model updates and forecast revisions from the National Weather Service are primary catalysts that shift odds in this market. Unusual atmospheric patterns, heat domes, or unexpected cold fronts can trigger rapid repricing as traders adjust their expectations. Real-time temperature readings on July 12 itself will drive sharp moves as the day progresses and actual conditions become clearer. Social media discussions, news coverage of extreme weather, and historical temperature comparisons for that date may also influence trader sentiment and push odds higher or lower before the final settlement.
