Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because they incorporate real-time information and financial incentives for accuracy. While meteorologists publish deterministic forecasts based on atmospheric models, this market aggregates the beliefs of traders who profit only if their predictions prove correct. Comparing the implied probability from market prices to official forecasts from national weather services can reveal where traders expect conditions to differ from model consensus. Both sources offer value: analysts provide detailed reasoning, while markets distill that information into a single probability.
On Polymarket, traders set the odds by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each share represents a claim on a specific temperature outcome, and the price of that share reflects the probability traders assign to it occurring. As more traders buy shares predicting higher temperatures, the price rises; conversely, selling pressure lowers it. This continuous repricing mechanism ensures the market remains responsive to new weather data, model updates, and trader conviction throughout the period leading up to resolution.
This market resolves around Jul 7, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Amsterdam on July 7 becomes verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing actual observed temperatures against the threshold specified in the winning outcome. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the close of the trading day, once official meteorological data is published and confirmed. Traders should monitor weather station reports and official forecasts as the event date approaches to assess their positions.
Major weather model updates, seasonal pattern shifts, and atmospheric pressure changes can significantly move this market. Publication of extended forecasts from national weather services, unusual heat waves or cold snaps affecting Northern Europe, and real-time temperature readings in the days leading up to July 7 all influence trader positioning. Additionally, any significant weather events—such as storm systems or high-pressure ridges—that alter the expected atmospheric conditions will trigger repricing. Traders typically increase activity as the event date nears and uncertainty narrows.
