Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader positioning and financial incentives alongside meteorological models. While professional meteorologists publish deterministic point forecasts or confidence intervals, this market aggregates the distributed knowledge of participants who profit or lose based on accuracy. Comparing the implied probability here to consensus forecasts from national weather services can reveal where traders see upside or downside risk relative to official guidance, offering a complementary perspective on temperature expectations.
On Polymarket, traders buy and sell shares representing different temperature ranges, with each share's price reflecting the probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market uses an automated market maker mechanism, meaning prices adjust continuously based on order flow and liquidity. As traders accumulate positions ahead of July 5, the price of each outcome bracket shifts to balance supply and demand, creating a dynamic odds display that reflects evolving expectations about Amsterdam's peak temperature.
This market resolves around Jul 5, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Amsterdam on July 5 becomes verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the final reported temperature against the predefined outcome brackets offered in the market. Traders holding shares in the correct range receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the close of the trading day once official meteorological data is published.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, or anomalous atmospheric conditions in the days leading up to July 5 can significantly move odds. Real-time weather model updates from European meteorological centers often trigger repricing as traders adjust their positions. Unusual heat waves, cold fronts, or circulation changes across the North Sea and continental Europe may also influence expectations. Additionally, as the event date draws closer, increased trading activity and refined forecasts typically narrow the probability distribution and tighten the odds across outcome ranges.
