This event monitors whether Austin sees consecutive days with average temperatures above 90°F in the same week of October 5, 2026. The result hinges on the length of uninterrupted high-temperature periods during that period.
The market resolves to Yes if there are at least 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 consecutive days within October 5, 2026, through October 11, 2026, where the daily average temperature at KAUS in Austin is strictly greater than 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The daily average temperature is the arithmetic mean of hourly temperature values reported by The Weather Company for KAUS from 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM local time, rounded to the nearest whole degree. Only days within the specified week contribute to a streak, and data as published at the Expiration Time are used, with no later revisions allowed. An average of exactly 90 degrees Fahrenheit does not meet the condition, and a day with fewer than 18 reported hourly values invalidates the streak and does not count for payout.
Currently, it’s difficult to directly compare the odds offered in this market to specific analyst forecasts for Austin’s October temperatures. However, prediction markets often aggregate diverse information and expert opinions, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional forecasts. If analysts predict a higher or lower probability of a heat wave than is reflected in the current price, we might see increased trading activity as participants attempt to capitalize on the discrepancy. It's important to note that prediction markets reflect what traders *believe* will happen, not necessarily what experts *expect*.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction. Traders buy and sell contracts representing the outcome of the event. The price of a contract reflects the market’s collective assessment of the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price fluctuates based on supply and demand. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This means the price can change rapidly as new information becomes available or as sentiment shifts regarding the potential for a prolonged heat wave in Austin. The current price indicates the cost to buy a contract that pays out if the specified conditions are met.
This market resolves around Oct 13, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the resolution will be based on the average daily temperature in Austin, Texas, during the week of October 5, 2026. The number of consecutive days where the average temperature exceeds 90°F will be tallied to determine whether the market resolves in favor of the ‘yes’ outcome or the ‘no’ outcome. The data will be sourced from publicly available weather records.
Several factors could significantly influence trading activity in this market. Long-range weather forecasts released in the months leading up to October 2026 will be closely watched. Any indications of a developing El Niño or La Niña pattern, known to influence Texas weather, could shift the market price. Additionally, news reports concerning climate change trends or unusual weather patterns in the region could impact trader sentiment. Finally, even general economic conditions or public perception of climate risks could contribute to price movements in this market.
