This market tracks whether Russia will target Kyiv with a qualifying military action on October 15, 2026, specifically an air strike or surface-to-surface missile strike. Currently, the Polymarket platform assigns a 95.7% probability to this outcome resolving as “Yes,” based on information from official sources from the governments and militaries of Ukraine and Russia, as well as credible reporting. The resolution source will rely on a consensus of information to determine the occurrence, attribution, and timing of any qualifying military action. Keep an eye on developments leading up to November 1, 2026, as this is the estimated resolution date for the market and the point at which a consensus will be reached regarding events on October 15th.
This market will resolve to “Yes” if Russia targets Kyiv through a qualifying military action on the specified date, Kyiv time. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No.” A qualifying military action refers to an air strike or a surface-to-surface missile strike, initiated by Russia, directed at Kyiv. An air strike includes bombs, air-to-surface missiles, and air-launched drones. A surface-to-surface missile strike includes one-way attack drones and surface-to-surface missiles such as cruise or ballistic missiles. The following actions do not constitute a qualifying military action: Surface-to-air missile strikes; Small-arms fire; Ground incursions; Cyber operations; Naval gunfire and artillery fire; Howitzers, artillery pieces, mortars, and rocket artillery (e.g. MLRS systems); Minor surface-to-surface strikes, including short range loitering munitions, FPV drones, and ATGM strikes; Any threat, authorization, or announcement of force that has not been executed. Military action that consists primarily or exclusively of munitions that are intercepted before impact will still qualify if they constitute a qualifying military action during the specified timeframe; whether the munitions were intercepted, where the munitions landed, and whether damage resulted will not be considered. A military action will be considered directed at Kyiv if it targets any location within the city of Kyiv. The occurrence, attribution, timing, and target of a qualifying military action will be primarily determined based on a consensus of information available from the resolution sources. Where multiple sources conflict regarding the occurrence, attribution, timing, or target of a relevant military action, this market will remain open until the earlier of: i) the confirmation of the occurrence, attribution, timing, and target of the action based on a consensus of information available from the resolution sources or ii) 3 full calendar days (Kyiv time) after the specified date. If this period would extend past the end date, this market will remain open to allow for 3 full calendar days to pass. If, at the end of the third calendar day, conflicting reports remain as to the occurrence, attribution, or timing of the action, this market will resolve based on the totality of information available from the resolution sources at that time. No single statement, denial, or presentation of evidence will govern where it is contradicted by the totality of information. The resolution sources for this market will be official information from the governments and militaries of Ukraine and Russia and a consensus of credible reporting.
Currently, the prediction market offers a distinct perspective compared to traditional analyst forecasts regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. While expert opinions vary, this market aggregates the collective wisdom of traders, providing a continuously updated probability assessment. It’s important to note that analysts often rely on geopolitical assessments and intelligence reports, while this market reflects a more dynamic view based on real-money wagers. Discrepancies between the two can highlight areas of disagreement or uncertainty about the conflict’s trajectory.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief about whether Russia will target Kyiv. As more traders buy 'yes' shares, the price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. Conversely, increased selling of 'yes' shares lowers the price. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the aggregated sentiment of all participants, offering a real-time probability estimate. This differs from traditional polling, as traders have a financial stake in their predictions.
This market resolves around Nov 1, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Resolution will depend on whether a verifiable military targeting of Kyiv by Russia occurs before the resolution date. This includes any direct military strikes or sustained occupation efforts within the city limits. The outcome will be based on widely accepted and documented events, ensuring a transparent and objective resolution process.
Several signals or events could significantly impact this market. Major escalations in fighting, such as a large-scale Russian offensive, would likely increase the probability of a Kyiv target. Conversely, successful Ukrainian counteroffensives or diplomatic breakthroughs could decrease it. Public statements from key political figures, particularly regarding Russia's strategic objectives, could also influence trading activity. Any confirmed reports of troop movements towards Kyiv, or changes in Russia’s military posture, would be closely watched by traders and could move this market.
