Description

This market resolves to "Yes" if the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports an earthquake with a preferred magnitude of 6.0+ attributed to the listed country, with an origin time between October 1, 2026, 12:00 AM ET and October 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, by November 4, 2026, 12:00 AM ET. Otherwise, that market resolves "No". A qualifying earthquake must be counted for a country's market only if USGS attributes its location to that country in the event's location description, lists the earthquake with a preferred magnitude of 6.0 or higher, and lists it as occurring within the specified timeframe. Earthquakes without a preferred magnitude classification will not qualify. Revisions to a reported earthquake's underlying data, such as preferred magnitude and country attribution, will be considered until the end of the third calendar day after that earthquake's origin time (ET); revisions made after that time will not be considered. If a reported earthquake still qualifies at the end of its revision period, this market will resolve to "Yes" at that time, without remaining open until November 4, 2026, 12:00 AM ET. If it no longer qualifies at that time, this market will remain open until another qualifying earthquake is reported or the market's end date is reached, whichever comes first. If an earthquake with an origin time within a market's window has not yet appeared on the resolution source by November 4, 2026, 12:00 AM ET, this market end date may be extended for up to one week after November 4, 2026 and will resolve based on the preferred magnitude, country attribution, and timestamp of the event as of the end of its revision period (per the revision rules above), provided that revision period falls within the extension window. If the revision period would extend beyond the extension window, this market will resolve based on the data available at the end of the extension period. If the relevant data is not released by the end of the extension period, this market will resolve based on the data released up until that point. The resolution source for this event is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program earthquake catalog (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/), and only data released by USGS will be considered, regardless of other sources. If the resolution source becomes temporarily unavailable, the market will remain open until it resumes; if it remains unavailable through November 4, 2026, 12:00 AM ET, this market will resolve to "No".

Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the dashboard for the 6.0+ earthquake market tracks the current odds of a 6.0 magnitude or greater earthquake occurring anywhere in the world by the end of October. You’ll find the implied probability of various outcomes, along with the total volume traded in this market, currently at $16,988, and the 24-hour volume, which is $620. The dashboard provides a real-time view of how traders are assessing the likelihood of this event, offering insights into collective predictions.

Currently, it's difficult to directly compare the predictions in this market to specific analyst forecasts for earthquake occurrences. Unlike polls that ask about opinions, this market reflects what traders are *willing to bet* on, creating a different signal. While analysts may offer probabilities based on historical data and geological models, this market aggregates diverse information and risk assessment from a wide range of participants. The implied probability from this market provides a unique perspective on the perceived risk of a major earthquake.

On Polymarket, this market is priced using a continuous double auction, meaning traders can buy and sell shares representing their belief about whether a 6.0+ magnitude earthquake will occur by the specified date. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, reflecting the collective wisdom of the crowd. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price adjusts to represent the most up-to-date assessment of the event's probability. The current price indicates the market's consensus view.

This market resolves around Nov 4, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the occurrence (or non-occurrence) of a 6.0+ magnitude earthquake by that date is verifiable from credible public reporting. Data from established seismological agencies will be used to determine if an earthquake meeting the criteria occurred within the timeframe. The resolution will be based on publicly available data, ensuring transparency and objectivity in determining the final result of this market.

Several factors could significantly impact this market. Increased seismic activity in known earthquake zones, particularly the detection of foreshocks, would likely drive up the price. Conversely, a period of prolonged seismic quiet could lower it. Major geological reports or statements from seismologists assessing the risk of a large earthquake could also influence trading activity. News about preparedness efforts or government responses to earthquake threats might also contribute to shifts in the market as traders reassess the overall risk profile.
