This market will resolve to the bracket containing the magnitude of the largest earthquake recorded globally on November 4, 2026, as reported by the USGS Earthquake Catalog. Brackets: Under 5.3 / 5.3 to 5.4 / 5.5 to 5.6 / 5.7 to 5.8 / 5.9 to 6.0 / 6.1 or more. Exactly one bracket resolves "Yes". The observation period is the UTC calendar day: 00:00 UTC to 23:59 UTC on November 4, 2026. An earthquake is assigned to the day containing its origin time. Magnitude refers to the USGS preferred magnitude value, listed under 'Magnitude' in the format column. If USGS revises a magnitude after initial publication, the revision governs provided it is published before 2:00 PM ET on November 5, 2026. A value first published after that time is not considered. If the reported magnitude carries more than one decimal place, it is rounded to the nearest tenth using standard rounding conventions (0.05 rounds up). Brackets are inclusive of their stated endpoints. If no earthquake data for November 4, 2026 has been published by 2:00 PM ET on November 5, 2026, this market will resolve to the "Under 5.3" bracket. The resolution source for this market is the USGS Earthquake Catalog, maintained by the United States Geological Survey, at https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/.

Comparing prediction market odds to analyst forecasts reveals interesting insights into collective belief versus expert opinion. Currently, the prevailing sentiment in this market, as reflected by trading activity, may align with or diverge from geological surveys and seismological predictions. While analysts often provide probabilistic assessments based on historical data and geological models, this market represents a real-time aggregation of diverse perspectives, potentially incorporating factors not explicitly captured in traditional forecasts. It’s a fascinating way to see how the wisdom of the crowd stacks up against professional expertise.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different earthquake magnitude ranges. The price of each share reflects the market's collective assessment of the probability of that magnitude occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The higher the demand for a share, the higher its price, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds constantly adjust to new information and changing perceptions of risk, creating a forward-looking estimate of the most likely earthquake magnitude.
This market resolves around Nov 5, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the magnitude of the largest earthquake recorded on November 4, 2026, will be determined using data from established seismic monitoring networks. The resolution will be based on the highest magnitude earthquake officially reported by these networks, providing a clear and objective determination of the market’s outcome. This ensures a transparent and verifiable resolution process.
Several signals or events could significantly move this market before Nov 5, 2026. Major geological events, such as significant aftershocks in seismically active zones, or new research findings regarding earthquake probabilities, could all influence trading activity. Increased media coverage of earthquake preparedness or heightened seismic activity in specific regions could also drive shifts in market sentiment. Additionally, any announcements from geological surveys regarding increased risk assessments could lead to substantial changes in the odds offered in this market.
