Description

This market will resolve according to the number of tornadoes recorded in the United States during the specified month, based on the monthly count published on the National Centers for Environmental Information U.S. Tornadoes Time Series page (see: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monitoring/tornadoes/time-series). Only tornadoes appearing in the final NCEI dataset for that month will count. The brackets are mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive: each range is inclusive of both of its stated endpoints, and the monthly tornado count falls within exactly one bracket. As of market creation, the relevant report is scheduled to be released on November 11, 2026 at 11:00 AM ET (Release schedule: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monitoring/dyk/monthly-releases). The market will resolve based on the first relevant tornado count published on the NCEI tornado time-series page after this scheduled release time. If the value published after this scheduled release time is labeled preliminary, it will still determine resolution, and the market will resolve independently of any subsequent revisions, corrections, or retroactive adjustments. The market will not resolve based on any preliminary values published before the scheduled release time. If no data is published by the scheduled release time, or if the NCEI website is temporarily unavailable, this market will remain open until that data is made available. If the relevant data is not made available by the date of the next scheduled publication, this market will resolve based on available data for the most recent prior month. If the NCEI website becomes permanently unavailable, this market will resolve using another credible source.

Currently, it's difficult to directly compare the probabilities reflected in this market to specific analyst forecasts for October 2026 tornado activity. Historical data suggests that prediction markets can sometimes outperform traditional forecasting methods, as they aggregate the wisdom of the crowd. However, the accuracy of this market will depend on the information available to traders and their ability to interpret it effectively. It’s important to remember that forecasts from meteorologists and climate scientists rely on complex models, while this market reflects the collective judgment of participants.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous double auction, meaning traders can buy and sell shares representing their belief about the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of the event occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price will adjust to reflect the evolving consensus. This dynamic pricing mechanism allows for a real-time assessment of the likelihood of significant tornado activity in the US during October 2026, based on the collective intelligence of the market.

This market resolves around Nov 11, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The resolution will be based on the official tornado count reported by the National Weather Service (NWS) for the month of October 2026. Specifically, the market will assess whether the number of tornadoes exceeds a predetermined threshold, as defined in the market’s contract details on Polymarket. This ensures a transparent and objective determination of the outcome, based on established meteorological data.
