This event tracks the average real-time electricity price at a specific regional hub over a week. Prices reflect the cost to supply power during each hour, averaged across all hours. Higher prices typically indicate increased demand or constrained supply during that period.
The event evaluates whether the all-hours average real-time power price at PJM AEP-Dayton Hub exceeds specified thresholds ($25/MWh, $35/MWh, $45/MWh, $55/MWh, $70/MWh, $100/MWh, or $150/MWh) for the week ending October 30, 2026. The relevant period runs from October 23, 2026 at 5:00 PM EDT to October 30, 2026 at 5:00 PM EDT, including the start time but excluding the end time. Prices are drawn from PJM Data Miner 2’s verified hourly real-time total Locational Marginal Prices (LMPs), with intervals aligned to Eastern-time start times. The calculation involves taking a simple average of all applicable hourly prices—including any negative prices—and rounding the result to two decimal places, with exact halves rounded away from zero. If the average equals the threshold, the outcome resolves as No. Trading closes on October 30, 2026 at 4:59 PM EDT, and the final delivery interval is included in the calculation. Only the first published price for each hour is used; subsequent corrections are considered only if issued before expiration and accepted by the Exchange as material errors. Unverified, estimated, indicative, and forecast prices are excluded. Missing data points are not filled in. If at least 95% of required intervals are available, the average is calculated using available prices. If fewer than 95% of intervals are available, the event resolves only if the available data unequivocally determines the outcome; otherwise, it settles at the Exchange-determined last fair price under the full rules.
Currently, it's difficult to directly compare prediction market odds to specific analyst forecasts for this event. However, broadly speaking, prediction markets often incorporate a wider range of information and perspectives than traditional polls or individual analyst reports. This market reflects the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to make accurate predictions. If analysts are anticipating significant volatility in the PJM power market, we might see that reflected in higher trading volume and wider price spreads within this market.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction. Traders buy and sell contracts representing their beliefs about the future PJM power price. As more traders participate, the price of these contracts fluctuates, reflecting the evolving consensus view. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price represents the probability-weighted average of all possible outcomes, and traders aim to profit by accurately predicting where the actual price will land. This dynamic pricing mechanism ensures that the market efficiently incorporates new information.
This market resolves around Oct 30, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the average real-time power price at the PJM AEP-Dayton Hub during Week 44 will be used to determine the winning contracts. The platform will verify this data against official sources to ensure accuracy and transparency. Traders holding contracts on the correct price range will receive a payout based on the market’s pricing at resolution.
Several factors could influence the PJM power price market. Unexpected changes in weather patterns, particularly extreme temperatures driving increased demand for heating or cooling, are key catalysts. Significant fluctuations in natural gas prices, a primary fuel source for power generation, could also cause movement. Furthermore, any unplanned outages at major power plants within the PJM region or changes in regional transmission constraints could impact prices. News regarding energy policy or regulatory changes could also influence trading activity in this market.
