Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior, financial incentives, and crowd wisdom. While meteorologists rely on physics-based models and historical data, this market aggregates the beliefs of participants who have money at stake. Analysts may issue point forecasts or confidence intervals, whereas prediction markets express probability as a continuous price. Over time, markets tend to converge toward accuracy as traders arbitrage mispricings, though short-term disagreements can reveal where public opinion differs from expert consensus on temperature outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that sets odds based on the ratio of shares bought and sold for each temperature outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders purchase shares representing their belief about the lowest temperature, and the price of each outcome fluctuates as supply and demand shift. The market uses a continuous pricing mechanism, meaning there is no fixed order book—instead, every trade moves the price incrementally. This design encourages liquidity and allows traders to enter or exit positions at any time before the market closes, with transaction costs built into the spread between bid and ask prices.
This market resolves around Jun 17, 2026, once the lowest temperature recorded in Shanghai on June 17 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by official meteorological data, typically from China's national weather service or internationally recognized weather stations in the Shanghai region. Traders holding shares in the winning temperature range receive their payout proportionally. Until the event occurs and data is confirmed, the market remains open for trading, allowing participants to adjust positions based on updated forecasts and emerging weather patterns.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases can significantly move this market. Tropical systems, monsoon activity, or unexpected cold fronts approaching the region would trigger repricing as traders update their probability estimates. Official meteorological alerts or warnings issued by Chinese weather authorities often prompt sharp market moves. Additionally, historical temperature anomalies or climate indices—such as sea surface temperatures or pressure systems—may influence trader sentiment. As June 17 approaches, daily weather updates and short-range model consensus will increasingly dominate price action, with the final week typically seeing the most volatile trading.
