This market will resolve according to the total number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.5 or higher that occur anywhere on Earth between October 19, 2026, 12:00 AM ET and October 25, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program, with the minimum magnitude set to 5.5 and the date parameters set to the relevant dates for this market's timeframe (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/). If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until 48 hours after the market's closing time, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that time, another credible resolution source will be used. This market may not resolve until the timeframe of this market has concluded. If a qualifying earthquake has been recorded on the final day, this market may remain open for 24 hours to allow for revisions to the recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data. If no earthquake data for this market's timeframe has been published on the resolution source by 48 hours after the market's closing time, this market will resolve to the lowest bracket.

Currently, the prediction market odds reflect a collective assessment of the likelihood of different earthquake counts. This differs from traditional analyst forecasts, which often rely on historical data and geological models. While analysts may provide estimates of earthquake probabilities based on these factors, this market incorporates a broader range of information and real-time adjustments based on trader beliefs. It’s possible to see discrepancies between the two, as the market can rapidly adapt to new information or changing perceptions of risk, something that static analyst reports may not capture as quickly.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief about the final earthquake count. The price of each share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome being correct. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust to reflect the evolving consensus. The market’s depth and volume indicate the level of confidence traders have in different potential scenarios, providing a dynamic assessment of earthquake risk during the specified timeframe.
This market resolves around Oct 26, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the total number of magnitude 5.5 or greater earthquakes worldwide between October 19th and October 25th is verifiable from credible public reporting. Data will be sourced from established earthquake monitoring agencies to determine the final count. The outcome will be the integer number of qualifying earthquakes that occurred within the specified date range, and this will determine which shares pay out based on their corresponding outcome.
Several signals or events could significantly move this market. A major earthquake occurring during the October 19th-25th period would obviously have a substantial impact, increasing the probability of higher outcome counts. Conversely, a period of seismic quiet could lower the probabilities of higher counts. News reports about increased or decreased seismic activity in known earthquake zones, updates from geological survey organizations, and even shifts in public perception regarding earthquake risk could all influence trading activity and, consequently, the market’s price. Any significant seismic event will likely be quickly reflected in the market.
