Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Wellington temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and trading activity for predictions on the highest temperature in Wellington during July 3. The interface displays the current probability estimate alongside order-book depth and recent trade history. Traders buy and sell shares that resolve to $1 if their outcome occurs, with prices reflecting the collective forecast of market participants. This live pricing mechanism allows you to monitor how sentiment shifts as new weather data or forecasts emerge in the lead-up to the event.

Prediction markets and traditional weather forecasts operate on different principles. Meteorologists use physics-based models and historical data to project conditions, while traders in this market synthesize available forecasts, recent patterns, and uncertainty into a single probability. Market odds often reflect a broader range of scenarios than a single analyst's point estimate, incorporating tail risks and disagreement among experts. Comparing the implied probability here to official forecasts from New Zealand's weather service can reveal where traders see additional upside or downside risk relative to consensus predictions.

On Polymarket, traders set the odds by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker (AMM) pool. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome—such as whether the high will reach exactly 13°C—has its own share price, ranging from near-zero to near-$1, with the sum of all mutually exclusive outcomes equaling $1. As traders place orders, the pool adjusts prices to maintain balance, so larger trades move the odds more sharply than small ones. This continuous repricing ensures the market stays responsive to new information and trader conviction.

This market resolves around Jul 3, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Wellington on July 3 is confirmed and verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by the actual meteorological data reported for that day, typically from New Zealand's national weather authority or recognized climate monitoring stations. Resolution occurs after the trading window closes and the final temperature reading is official, at which point all shares in the winning outcome pay out $1 per share.

Several factors can shift odds in this market before Jul 3, 2026. Updated weather forecasts from the New Zealand MetService or international models may raise or lower expectations for the high. Seasonal climate patterns, ocean temperatures, and atmospheric pressure systems can all influence the final reading. Real-time weather developments—such as approaching fronts or heat waves—often trigger sharp repricing as traders react to new data. Additionally, historical temperature records for July 3 in Wellington may be referenced by participants seeking to calibrate their bets against past extremes.
