Frequently asked questions

The Panama City heat record market dashboard on Polymarket tracks real-time odds and trading activity for the highest temperature expected in Panama City on July 11. Traders buy and sell shares based on their forecasts of whether the day's peak temperature will fall into specific ranges. The dashboard displays current odds for each outcome, historical price movements, and total volume of $20,477 across all outcome categories. This live pricing reflects the collective prediction of market participants as new weather data and forecasts emerge.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior and incentives. While meteorologists issue point estimates or confidence intervals based on atmospheric models, this market aggregates the financial commitments of many participants with skin in the game. Traders who accurately predict the day's temperature stand to profit, creating pressure for odds to reflect genuine probability rather than institutional consensus alone. Comparing the implied odds here to published forecasts from national weather services can reveal where market participants see risk or opportunity that analysts may have underweighted.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that adjusts odds continuously as traders buy and sell outcome shares. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature range has its own contract, and the price of each reflects the probability traders assign to that outcome occurring. As new weather data arrives or forecasts shift, traders rebalance their positions, moving prices up or down. The spread between bid and ask prices tightens when volume is high and widens during quieter periods, directly affecting the cost of entering or exiting a position.

This market resolves around Jul 11, 2026, once July 11 has passed and the day's highest temperature in Panama City can be verified. The outcome is confirmed against credible public sources that record official weather data for the city. Traders holding shares in the outcome range that matches the verified temperature receive their payout, while other positions expire worthless. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the market end date, once the temperature reading is finalized and reported.

Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, or tropical storm activity in the Caribbean could significantly move odds in this market. Real-time atmospheric data releases and model updates from meteorological agencies often trigger repricing as traders adjust their exposure. Unusual heat waves or cooler-than-normal conditions in the weeks leading up to July 11 may also shift expectations. Additionally, any historical temperature records or anomalies for that date in Panama City's past could prompt traders to reassess tail-risk outcomes, causing sharp moves in the outer temperature ranges.
