The event tracks the average real-time electricity price at the ERCOT Houston Hub over a specific week in 2026. Prices are calculated from 15-minute intervals and averaged to determine if they exceed various thresholds. The outcome reflects whether the average price surpasses set levels, influencing energy market dynamics and consumer costs.
The event resolves based on whether the all-hours average real-time power price at the ERCOT Houston Hub exceeds specified thresholds ($20/MWh, $30/MWh, $40/MWh, $50/MWh, $65/MWh, $100/MWh, or $200/MWh) for the week ending October 30, 2026. The average is calculated from 15-minute settlement prices over the period from October 23, 2026, at 5:00 PM EDT to October 30, 2026, at 5:00 PM EDT. The simple average of all applicable intervals is rounded to two decimal places, with exact halves rounded away from zero; equality with the threshold resolves to 'No'. If at least 95% of intervals have data, the average of available prices determines the outcome. If less than 95% of intervals are available, the outcome is resolved only if the available data conclusively confirms a result; otherwise, the market settles at the Exchange-determined last fair price. Only the first published prices are used, with later corrections considered only if accepted by the Exchange before expiration. Missing, unverified, estimated, indicative, and forecast prices are excluded from calculations.
Currently, it’s difficult to directly compare prediction market odds to specific analyst forecasts for this event. However, generally, prediction markets often incorporate a wider range of information and perspectives than traditional polls or analyst reports, potentially leading to more accurate predictions. It's important to remember that analyst forecasts are often point estimates, while this market represents a probability distribution of possible outcomes. Discrepancies may arise due to differing methodologies, data sources, or assumptions about future conditions influencing the ERCOT power grid.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction. Traders buy and sell contracts representing their belief about whether the ERCOT Houston Hub average real-time power price during Week 44 will fall above or below a certain threshold. The price of each contract reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the prices converge to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. This dynamic pricing mechanism allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment.
This market resolves around Oct 30, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The final price will be based on the average of the real-time hourly power prices at the ERCOT Houston Hub during Week 44, as reported by the relevant energy market authorities. The market will determine whether the average price was above or below the levels represented by the contracts traded on Kalshi. Traders will then be paid out or required to pay based on the accuracy of their predictions.
Several factors could significantly impact this market. Weather forecasts are crucial, as extreme temperatures drive up electricity demand. Unexpected outages at power plants, whether due to maintenance or unforeseen events, could also tighten supply and raise prices. Changes in renewable energy generation, such as wind or solar output, will also play a role. Finally, broader economic conditions and natural gas prices – a key fuel source for power generation – can influence the overall cost of electricity in the ERCOT region and, therefore, move this market.
