How to read NBA DPOY odds, Coach of the Year odds and NBA MVP odds on prediction markets, and why the 65-game rule and a season-long clock change the price.

Oct 22, 2026

TL;DR
Checking NBA DPOY odds on opening week and wondering what a number like that means in October? It is a probability for an award that will not be decided for roughly seven months.
That changes how you should read it. This guide covers how the awards are decided, how to read the MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year markets, and why one rule about games played can move a price faster than any highlight. Any prediction market data on a season-long award is a long-dated contract, so timestamp it.
A global panel of 100 media members picks the winners, and the voting is tabulated by the independent accounting firm Ernst & Young, according to the NBA. Last season the league named Shai Gilgeous-Alexander MVP, Victor Wembanyama Defensive Player of the Year and Joe Mazzulla Coach of the Year.
The regular season runs from October 20 through April 11, 2027, so the awards come after the season ends. Last season, Defensive Player of the Year was announced in late April and Coach of the Year on May 26. Those dates followed that pattern last season, and the 2026-27 dates are not set yet.
That timeline is what makes these markets long-dated. A price in October covers months of games, injuries and trades.
NBA MVP odds 2026 show the same race through different crowds. The market's top-priced MVP candidate is currently Victor Wembanyama 28.5% on Polymarket.
Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated exchange, and it prices Wemby at 32%.
A gap between the two is normal. It does not mean one platform is wrong. Each venue has its own traders and liquidity, and its own settlement rules. That is the subject of our piece on why odds disagree across platforms.
Opinion runs its own order book and board, so check it too. Limitless and Predict.Fun round out the five platforms PredictionHero tracks. Which NBA award contracts each one lists changes over time, so look at every board directly. PredictionHero lines up prediction market data from all five platforms on one screen.
NBA DPOY odds measure the chance that one named player wins Defensive Player of the Year. The top-priced candidate is currently also Victor Wembanyama on Kalshi 71%.
The market is voting-driven, so it prices what a panel of 100 media members will decide, not who is best by any one statistic. Last season's winner was the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year in NBA history, according to the league, which shows how lopsided a vote can get.
If you search DPOY NBA odds, you will usually find a long list of names. Read the first few prices and ignore the tail. Long fields tend to overprice the longshots, which our guide to favorite-longshot bias explains.
NBA Coach of the Year odds price one coach to win the award. The top-priced candidate is currently Sean Sweeney on Polymarket 5.5%.
This award is voted on at the end of the season by the same panel of media members. Voters weigh a team's whole season, so the market reprices as the standings take shape.
Because it is announced in May, last season on May 26, it sits near the end of the awards calendar. A price in October says little about the final standings.
The new collective bargaining agreement requires players, in most instances, to play in 65 regular-season games to be eligible for awards such as MVP and the All-NBA teams, according to the NBA. That rule turns a missed game into a pricing event.
It has teeth. Last season Luka Doncic played 64 games, Cade Cunningham 63 and Anthony Edwards 60. Doncic and Cunningham were ruled eligible after appeals under the agreement's extraordinary-circumstances provision, and Edwards's appeal was denied, according to AP.
When you read a player's price, check how many games they have played. A candidate near the threshold carries a risk that does not appear in their stats. Whether the rule covers Defensive Player of the Year in a given contract is worth checking in that contract's rules.
Run through five checks, in this order.
Awards markets also move in steps, not drifts, when a vote or an announcement lands. We cover that pattern in our piece on awards-season contracts.
They change throughout the day, so use the live figures in this article rather than a number copied from another page. The market prices each candidate as a probability, and the live values show how it weighs the Defensive Player of the Year race right now.
A global panel of 100 media members votes on the awards, and Ernst & Young tabulates the ballots, according to the NBA. Because the result depends on that panel, prediction markets price what voters are likely to decide, not a single statistic or ranking.
Under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, players in most instances must appear in 65 regular-season games to be eligible for awards such as MVP and the All-NBA teams. Players can appeal under an extraordinary-circumstances provision, and the league has ruled some players eligible after appeals.
After the regular season ends, which is April 11, 2027 this year. Last season Defensive Player of the Year came in late April and Coach of the Year on May 26. The 2026-27 award dates are not set yet, so check the league's schedule.
No single platform wins on every count. Polymarket, Kalshi, Limitless, Predict.Fun and Opinion each run their own order book and trader base. Compare volume and spread on each board, read each platform's resolution rules, and treat agreement across platforms as a stronger signal than any one price.
PredictionHero aggregates publicly available prediction market data for informational purposes only. This is not financial advice. Prediction markets may not be available in all jurisdictions.
