Intro

This market tracks whether Former President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea will receive a death sentence from a first-instance court for any criminal charge. On Opinion, the leading outcome carries a probability of 20.0%. Resolution will be determined by official statements from South Korean courts or the Ministry of Justice, confirmed by credible news sources including Yonhap News, The Korea Herald, Reuters, BBC, or AP. Watch for the June 30, 2026 deadline at 11:59 PM ET, which marks the final moment for a first-instance death sentence verdict to qualify for a YES resolution.

Opinion

This Market Resolves YES if, on or before June 30, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, a South Korean court of competent jurisdiction issues a first-instance judgment sentencing Former President of South Korea Yoon Suk Yeol to the death penalty for any criminal offense. This Market Resolves NO otherwise. Resolution Criteria: 1.The market resolves to "Yes" if Yoon Suk Yeol receives a death sentence for any criminal charge, including but not limited to insurrection, rebellion, treason, or related offenses. 2.A suspended death sentence does not qualify as a death sentence for resolution purposes. 3.The market resolves based on the sentence as pronounced by the presiding judge. Appellate proceedings after the first-instance verdict do not affect resolution. Expiration & Edge Cases: 1.Deadline: If no death sentence has been pronounced by June 30, 2026, 11:59 PM ET for any reason (including trial delays, postponements, or a recess), the market resolves to "No". 2.Trial Delays: If no verdict is reached by the deadline for any reason (delays, postponements, recesses), the market resolves to "No." 3.Pardon: A pardon issued after a death sentence is pronounced does not affect the "Yes" outcome. A pardon issued before any death sentence is pronounced, which prevents such a sentence from occurring before the deadline, results in "No." 4.Death of Accused: If Yoon Suk Yeol dies before a verdict, the market resolves to "No." 5.Mistrial/Dismissal: If the trial results in a mistrial, dismissal, or dropped charges, before the deadline, the market resolves to "No." 6.Sentence Correction: If a death sentence is issued by the deadline, resolve “YES” even if later modified/overturned. Resolution Source: Official statements from any competent court, or the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Korea. Secondary confirmation via at least two credible news sources (e.g., Yonhap News, The Korea Herald, Reuters, BBC, AP).

Prediction markets and traditional polls measure different things: polls capture public opinion snapshots, while this market reflects traders' probabilistic assessments based on legal precedent, court filings, and expert analysis. Prediction market participants have financial incentive to forecast accurately, which often produces more refined estimates than aggregate polling. For this particular outcome, comparing market odds to media commentary and legal expert assessments can reveal whether traders are pricing in factors that public discourse may underweight or overweight.

On Opinion, traders buy and sell shares representing yes or no outcomes, with the current market price reflecting the collective probability estimate. On Opinion, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price discovery mechanism rewards accurate forecasters and penalizes poor predictions, creating continuous incentive alignment. As new information emerges—court rulings, procedural developments, or political shifts—traders adjust positions, moving the odds in real time. This dynamic pricing model allows you to track how market participants are updating their conviction as the case progresses.

This market resolves around Jun 30, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The resolution hinges on whether a death sentence is formally imposed on the former president by that date. Legal proceedings, appeals, and any clemency or commutation decisions will all factor into the final determination. Traders should monitor court announcements and official government statements as key signals.

Major court rulings, verdict announcements, and appellate decisions will likely trigger significant price swings. Political developments—including potential changes in administration, legislative action, or clemency discussions—could reshape trader expectations. International diplomatic pressure or statements from allied governments may also influence sentiment. Additionally, any procedural delays or accelerations in the trial timeline, media coverage of new evidence, and shifts in public opinion could prompt traders to reassess their positions and adjust odds accordingly.
