Description

This market will resolve to “Yes” if any finalized daily number of transit calls (“Arrivals of Ships”) for the Strait of Hormuz reported by IMF Portwatch is equal to or above the listed value for any date between market creation and October 31, 2026. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. Transit calls include container, dry bulk, roll-on/roll-off, general cargo, and tanker ships. Ships not reported by IMF Portwatch will not be considered. Data for a specific date must be finalized before it is considered for this market (namely, once the next date's data point is available, the previous one is finalized). This market will resolve as soon as a qualifying figure has been finalized or once all relevant data has been finalized. If the data for the final date of the specified timeframe has not been finalized by the end of the third calendar day (ET) after the day on which such data is first released, this market will resolve based on data published up to that point. Additionally, if not all relevant data has been released and finalized within 14 calendar days of the end of the specified period, this market will resolve based on data published up to that point. In case of obvious data integrity issues (i.e., erroneous data), the market may remain open until the end of the third calendar day (ET) after the date on which such data is first released to allow for corrections. Data integrity issues refer only to clerical or other similar errors in the underlying data, and do not include cases where IMF Portwatch differs from alternative sources. Only revisions to previously published data points made before the applicable resolution time will be considered. The resolution source for this market will be IMF Portwatch, specifically the transit calls data published for the Strait of Hormuz at https://portwatch.imf.org/pages/cb5856222a5b4105adc6ee7e880a1730, both in the chart and through downloadable files.

Frequently asked questions

Comparing prediction market odds to those offered by sportsbooks is challenging, as sportsbooks typically focus on more traditional sporting events. However, the core principle is similar: both reflect the probability of an event occurring, as perceived by those placing bets. In this case, the odds on Polymarket represent the collective wisdom of traders specifically focused on geopolitical and logistical factors affecting shipping. While sportsbooks might offer odds on related events – such as oil price fluctuations – they won't directly address the specific question of whether ships will transit the Strait of Hormuz by Nov 1, 2026.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief about the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of the event occurring – a higher price indicates greater confidence in ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders adjust their positions based on new information, geopolitical developments, and analysis of shipping patterns, driving the price up or down. This dynamic pricing reflects the evolving assessment of risk and opportunity within the market.

This market resolves around Nov 1, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the resolution will depend on whether reports from reputable sources – such as shipping news outlets, government statements, or maritime tracking data – confirm that ships have transited the Strait of Hormuz on any day before or on October 31. The outcome will be determined by a clear demonstration of ship traffic through the strait, not by any specific numerical threshold or subjective judgment.

Several signals or events could significantly move this market before Nov 1, 2026. Escalations in geopolitical tensions in the region, such as increased military activity or attacks on shipping vessels, would likely drive the price down, indicating a lower probability of safe passage. Conversely, diplomatic breakthroughs or de-escalation efforts could boost confidence and increase the price. Major disruptions to global oil supply, or significant changes in shipping routes, could also influence trading activity. Finally, any official statements from key stakeholders – including governments, shipping companies, or international organizations – could impact the market.
