These markets assess whether the Texas power grid will experience exceptionally high electricity demand on a specific future date. The outcome hinges on measured peak usage levels against predefined thresholds. Each market corresponds to a different demand level benchmark for comparison.
All markets resolve based on the highest hourly total system load reported by ERCOT for September 5, 2026. The Expiration Value for each market is derived from the highest value in the TOTAL column of the first complete “Actual System Load by Forecast Zone” CSV report published by ERCOT for that operating day. Each value reflects the ERCOT system load for a full hour, with instantaneous readings excluded. Comparisons are made using published values without rounding, and later revisions, settlement adjustments, or republications of the data will not alter the Expiration Value. Markets resolve to Yes if the recorded peak load exceeds their respective threshold (ranging from 78,000 MW to 89,000 MW), with each market having an incrementally higher threshold for resolution.
Currently, prediction market participants are expressing their views on Texas electricity demand through their trading activity. It’s common to see differences between these crowdsourced predictions and those made by traditional analysts or polling data. These discrepancies can arise from varying methodologies, access to information, or simply differing perspectives on the key drivers influencing demand. Comparing this market to expert forecasts can offer a broader understanding of potential outcomes and the range of plausible scenarios for peak electricity usage in Texas.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction, meaning buyers and sellers submit bids and offers, and trades occur when they match. The price reflects the probability of the event occurring, with higher prices indicating a lower probability and vice versa. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders are constantly adjusting their valuations based on new information and their own expectations, leading to dynamic price fluctuations. This creates a real-time assessment of the likelihood of the specified peak electricity demand level being reached in Texas.
This market resolves around Sep 13, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The final price will reflect the actual peak electricity demand recorded by ERCOT on September 5, 2026. The resolution will be based on official data released by ERCOT, ensuring a transparent and objective determination of whether the predicted demand level was met. Traders will then be able to collect their winnings or settle their losing positions based on the final market price.
Several factors could significantly influence trading activity in this market. Weather forecasts for Texas in the late summer of 2026 will be closely watched, as extreme heat drives up electricity demand for cooling. Changes in the state’s energy mix, such as increased renewable energy generation or the addition of new power plants, could also affect demand forecasts. Furthermore, economic conditions and population growth in Texas will play a role, as these factors influence overall energy consumption. Any unexpected events, like major infrastructure disruptions, could also lead to substantial price movements in this market.
