This event tracks whether the Texas power grid will experience exceptionally high electricity demand on a specific future date. It reflects potential strain on energy infrastructure due to factors like extreme weather or increased consumption. The outcome depends on real-time grid performance data from an official utility operator.
All markets resolve based on the highest hourly total system load reported by ERCOT for September 26, 2026, against a specific threshold. The Expiration Value is determined from the first complete “Actual System Load by Forecast Zone” CSV report published by ERCOT for that operating day, using the highest value in the TOTAL column. Each market has a unique threshold (e.g., above 79,000 MW, above 79,500 MW, etc.), and if the reported load exceeds the respective threshold, that market resolves to Yes. All values represent full-hour system loads; instantaneous readings are excluded. Comparisons use published values without rounding, and later revisions, settlements, adjustments, or republications do not alter the Expiration Value.
Currently, it's difficult to directly compare the odds in this market to specific analyst forecasts for Texas electricity demand. However, generally, prediction markets often incorporate a wider range of information and perspectives than traditional polls or analyst reports. This includes real-time data, expert opinions, and the collective wisdom of traders. If analyst forecasts suggest a particular peak demand level, we’d expect to see corresponding movement in this market’s prices, reflecting whether traders agree or disagree with those predictions. The market serves as a dynamic aggregation of expectations, potentially offering a more nuanced view than static forecasts.
On Kalshi, this market is priced through a continuous double auction, meaning buyers and sellers submit bids and asks for contracts that pay out based on the outcome. The price of a contract reflects the market’s assessment of the probability of that outcome occurring. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders are constantly adjusting their prices based on new information and their own analysis, creating a dynamic and efficient price discovery process. The current price indicates what traders are willing to pay or receive for a contract that pays out if the peak electricity demand on September 26, 2026, reaches a specific level.
This market resolves around Oct 4, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the resolution will be based on the highest hourly total system load reported for the ERCOT grid on September 26, 2026. The official data from ERCOT will be used to determine whether the peak demand exceeded the levels defined in the market contracts. The outcome will be determined by the actual reported peak demand, not by any subjective interpretation or forecast.
Several factors could significantly impact this market. Weather forecasts for Texas in September 2026 will be crucial, as extreme heat drives up electricity demand for cooling. Changes in the state’s energy mix, such as increased reliance on renewable sources or natural gas, could also influence demand patterns. Major economic events or shifts in industrial activity within Texas could alter overall electricity consumption. Finally, any news regarding grid infrastructure improvements or potential outages could affect traders’ expectations and move prices in this market.
