This event tracks the peak electricity demand on Texas' ERCOT grid for a specific future date. The outcome depends on whether the highest recorded hourly load exceeds various threshold levels. The data comes directly from official ERCOT reports for that day.
All markets in this event resolve based on the highest hourly total system load reported by ERCOT for September 22, 2026. The determining value comes from the first complete 'Actual System Load by Forecast Zone' CSV report published by ERCOT for that operating day, using the highest value found in the TOTAL column. Each market has a different threshold (ranging from 79,000 MW to 89,000 MW) – if the recorded peak load exceeds that threshold, the market resolves to Yes; otherwise, it resolves to No. All values are taken as published without rounding, and later revisions, settlement adjustments, or republications of the data will not affect the result. Only full-hour values are considered; instantaneous readings shown elsewhere by ERCOT are ignored.
Currently, it's difficult to directly compare prediction market odds to traditional analyst forecasts for the Texas electricity demand market. However, generally, prediction markets can offer a unique perspective, aggregating the wisdom of many individuals rather than relying on a single analyst's opinion. If analyst forecasts consistently diverge from the price action in this market, it could suggest differing assumptions about factors influencing demand, such as weather patterns, economic activity, or grid reliability. It’s important to consider both sources of information when forming an opinion.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction. Traders submit buy and sell orders for contracts representing different peak electricity demand levels. The price of each contract fluctuates based on supply and demand, reflecting the collective beliefs of the traders. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This means the price you see represents the probability that a specific outcome will occur, as determined by the traders themselves. As more trades occur, the price should converge towards a more accurate estimate of the eventual peak demand.
This market resolves around Sep 30, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the actual peak electricity demand on the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid on September 22, 2026, will be used to determine which contracts pay out. The resolution will be based on official data released by ERCOT, ensuring a transparent and verifiable outcome. Traders will then receive payouts based on the final peak demand level relative to the contracts they held.
Several signals or events could significantly move this market. Major weather events, particularly heat waves, are likely to increase expectations for peak demand. Changes in economic activity in Texas, such as significant industrial expansion or contraction, could also impact demand forecasts. Furthermore, announcements regarding grid infrastructure improvements or regulatory changes affecting energy production could influence trading activity. Unexpected events like major power plant outages or disruptions to fuel supplies could also lead to price fluctuations in this market.
