This event tracks whether electricity demand in Texas's ERCOT grid will exceed specific thresholds on a particular day. The outcome depends on official hourly load measurements reported after the fact, reflecting real-world energy consumption patterns.
All markets resolve based on the highest hourly total system load reported by ERCOT for September 18, 2026. The determining value comes from the first complete “Actual System Load by Forecast Zone” CSV report published by ERCOT for that operating day, specifically the highest value found in the TOTAL column. Each market has a different threshold (ranging from 78,000 MW to 88,000 MW); if the reported peak load exceeds a market's threshold, that market resolves to Yes, otherwise No. All values represent full-hour measurements—instantaneous readings are excluded. The reported values are used as published without rounding, and no later revisions, settlements, adjustments, or republications affect the result.
Currently, it’s difficult to directly compare the predictions in this market to traditional analyst forecasts. However, generally, prediction markets often incorporate a wider range of information and perspectives than typical polls or expert opinions. This can lead to differences in predicted outcomes, as the collective judgment of traders may identify factors that analysts overlook. It’s important to remember that this market reflects what participants believe will happen, not necessarily what experts *expect* to happen, and these views can diverge significantly.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction. Traders submit bids for the 'yes' side (demand exceeding a certain level) and asks for the 'no' side (demand remaining below that level). The prices adjust dynamically based on supply and demand, reflecting the collective beliefs of all participants. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The closer the event gets, the more the price will likely fluctuate as new information emerges and traders refine their predictions. This creates a constantly updating assessment of the probability of different peak demand scenarios.
This market resolves around Sep 26, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the resolution will be based on the highest hourly total system load reported for the ERCOT grid on September 18, 2026. The reported value will be sourced from official ERCOT data, ensuring a transparent and objective determination of whether contracts settled above or below the specified megawatt thresholds. The outcome will be determined by the official peak demand reported by the grid operator.
Several factors could significantly influence this market. Weather forecasts for Texas in September 2026 will be a major driver, as extreme heat increases electricity demand for cooling. Changes in the state’s energy mix – for example, increased reliance on renewable sources or natural gas – could also impact predictions. Unexpected economic developments affecting industrial activity or population growth in Texas could shift demand expectations. Finally, any news regarding grid infrastructure upgrades or potential disruptions could cause traders to reassess the likelihood of high peak demand.
