This event tracks whether electricity demand in Texas's ERCOT grid exceeds specific thresholds on a particular day. The outcome depends on official hourly load data published after the event date, reflecting real-world energy consumption patterns.
All markets share a common settlement methodology based on ERCOT's officially published hourly total system load data for September 16, 2026. Each market has a distinct threshold (ranging from 79,000 MW to 89,000 MW). If the highest recorded hourly load during that day exceeds a market's specific threshold, that market resolves to Yes; otherwise, it resolves to No. The Expiration Value for all markets is derived from the highest value in the TOTAL column of the first complete “Actual System Load by Forecast Zone” CSV report published by ERCOT for that operating day. All values represent full-hour system loads; instantaneous readings are excluded. Comparisons use published values without rounding, and the settlement is final once reported—subsequent revisions, adjustments, or republications do not alter the result.
Currently, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than many traditional analyst forecasts. While some energy analysts predict a moderate increase in demand due to continued economic growth in Texas, this market suggests a wider range of potential outcomes. This divergence could be due to the prediction market’s ability to incorporate a broader set of factors, including weather patterns, unexpected grid outages, and real-time adjustments in energy consumption. It’s important to note that analyst forecasts are often point estimates, whereas this market represents a probability distribution of possibilities.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction. Traders buy and sell contracts representing different peak demand levels. The price of a contract reflects the market’s assessment of the probability that the actual peak demand will exceed that level. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. This dynamic pricing mechanism ensures that the market is constantly updating its forecast based on the latest available data and insights.
This market resolves around Sep 24, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The official peak electricity demand for September 16, 2026, as reported by ERCOT (the Electric Reliability Council of Texas), will be used to determine which contracts pay out. The contracts will settle based on whether the actual peak demand exceeds the level specified in each contract. This ensures a transparent and objective resolution process for this market.
Several signals or events could significantly move this market. Major weather events, such as extreme heat waves or unexpected cold snaps, are key catalysts, as they directly impact electricity demand. Changes in Texas’s economic outlook, including significant job growth or declines in key industries, could also shift expectations. Furthermore, announcements regarding new energy infrastructure projects, regulatory changes affecting the power grid, or even advancements in energy efficiency technologies could all influence trading activity in this market. Any news impacting the supply or demand balance for electricity in Texas is likely to be reflected in the market prices.
