These markets track whether electricity demand in Texas will exceed specific thresholds on a particular day. The outcome depends on measured usage levels during normal operating hours, reflecting energy consumption patterns influenced by weather and economic activity.
All markets resolve based on the highest hourly total system load reported by ERCOT for September 15, 2026. Each market has a different threshold, ranging from 78,000 MW to 89,000 MW. If the recorded peak load exceeds a market's specific threshold, that market resolves to Yes; otherwise, it resolves to No. The determining data comes from the first complete “Actual System Load by Forecast Zone” CSV report published by ERCOT for that operating day. Only full-hour values from the TOTAL column are considered — instantaneous readings are excluded. Values are evaluated as published without rounding, and later revisions, settlements, adjustments, or republications do not alter the result.
Currently, it’s difficult to directly compare prediction market odds to specific analyst forecasts for the Texas electricity demand market, as comprehensive public forecasts for this precise event are limited. However, generally, prediction markets often incorporate a wider range of information and perspectives than traditional polls or analyst reports. This market reflects the collective judgment of traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome, potentially leading to a more nuanced and accurate forecast than those relying on a single source or methodology. It’s a good practice to compare this market’s implied probabilities against available expert opinions.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction, meaning traders can buy and sell contracts at any time, setting the prices based on their expectations. The price of a contract represents the probability of the corresponding outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the prices adjust to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market depth indicates the volume of contracts available at different price points, offering insight into the strength of conviction behind various predictions. Traders aim to profit by accurately anticipating the outcome and trading accordingly.
This market resolves around Sep 23, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the resolution will be based on the highest hourly total system load reported for the ERCOT grid on September 15, 2026. The official data from ERCOT will be used to determine whether the peak demand exceeded the levels defined in the market contracts. This ensures a transparent and objective determination of the outcome, based on verifiable data.
Several factors could significantly influence this market. Weather forecasts for Texas in the weeks leading up to September 15, 2026, will be crucial, particularly predictions of extreme heat waves, which drive up electricity demand. Changes in the economic outlook for Texas, impacting industrial activity and overall energy consumption, could also play a role. Additionally, any announcements regarding new power generation capacity coming online or unexpected outages at existing power plants would likely move the market. Regulatory changes affecting energy usage or grid operations could also be a catalyst.
