The event tracks the peak electricity demand on the Texas ERCOT grid for a specific date, reflecting how energy consumption patterns respond to weather, economic activity, and other seasonal factors during that period.
All markets share the same settlement methodology and secondary rules. The outcome for each market is determined by whether the highest hourly total system load reported by ERCOT on October 22, 2026, exceeds a specific threshold. The Expiration Value for all markets is derived from the highest value in the TOTAL column of the first complete “Actual System Load by Forecast Zone” CSV report published by ERCOT for that operating day. Each value represents the ERCOT system load for a full hour, and instantaneous load readings are excluded. Values are compared as published without rounding, and any later revisions, settlement adjustments, or republications by ERCOT will not affect the Expiration Value. The market resolves to Yes if the recorded peak load surpasses the respective threshold for that market, and No otherwise.
Currently, it’s difficult to directly compare the probabilities reflected in this market to those from traditional analyst forecasts. However, the collective judgment of traders here offers a unique perspective, potentially incorporating real-time information and nuanced factors that standard models might miss. If analysts generally predict lower peak demand, this market’s odds would likely reflect a lower probability of exceeding 61,000 MW, and vice versa. It's important to remember that prediction markets represent a forward-looking assessment of probabilities, while analyst forecasts are often point estimates.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction. Traders buy and sell contracts representing their belief about the outcome. The price of a contract reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust to reflect the evolving consensus. The market’s depth—the number of contracts available at different price points—indicates the level of agreement or disagreement among traders.
This market resolves around Oct 30, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the resolution will depend on the highest hourly total system load reported for the ERCOT grid on October 22, 2026. If that peak demand exceeds 61,000 MW, contracts predicting ‘yes’ will settle at $1. Otherwise, they will settle at $0. The data used for resolution will be sourced from official ERCOT reports and publicly available data sets.
Several factors could significantly influence this market. Major weather events, such as extreme heat waves or cold snaps, are primary drivers of electricity demand in Texas. Changes in economic activity, particularly industrial output, can also impact overall consumption. Furthermore, announcements regarding new power generation capacity or changes to energy regulations could shift trader sentiment. Unexpected disruptions to fuel supplies or transmission infrastructure would also likely cause movement in this market, as would long-range weather forecasts closer to the resolution date.
