The event tracks the peak electricity demand on the Texas ERCOT grid for a specific day in 2026. It examines whether consumption surpasses various predefined thresholds, reflecting potential stress on energy infrastructure during high-demand periods. Outcomes depend solely on officially reported hourly load data from ERCOT.
All markets resolve based on the highest hourly total system load reported by ERCOT for October 14, 2026, compared against specific threshold values ranging from 76,000 MW to 85,000 MW. The Expiration Value for each market is determined by the highest value in the TOTAL column of the first complete “Actual System Load by Forecast Zone” CSV report published by ERCOT for that operating day. Each value represents ERCOT system load for the corresponding full hour, and instantaneous load readings from other sources are excluded. Values are compared as published without rounding, and later revisions, settlement adjustments, or republications of the data will not affect the resolution. If the recorded peak load exceeds a market's threshold, that market resolves to Yes; otherwise, it resolves to No.
Currently, it's difficult to directly compare prediction market odds to specific analyst forecasts for Texas electricity demand. However, it is common to see prediction markets outperform traditional polling and expert opinions, as they aggregate a diverse range of perspectives and allow participants to financially stake their beliefs. This market reflects the collective wisdom of traders, potentially identifying factors and nuances that may not be fully captured in conventional analyses. The dynamic pricing in this market can offer a unique signal compared to static forecasts.
On Kalshi, this market is priced through a continuous double auction, similar to a stock exchange. Traders submit bids (the price they’re willing to buy) and asks (the price they’re willing to sell) for contracts representing different peak electricity demand outcomes. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market price fluctuates based on supply and demand, reflecting the evolving expectations of participants. As more traders buy into a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. This creates a real-time assessment of probability, driven by informed speculation.
This market resolves around Oct 22, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the actual peak electricity demand in Texas on October 14, 2026, is verifiable from credible public reporting. The resolution will be based on data released by ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages the state’s power grid. The contract corresponding to the closest reported peak demand level will be considered the winning outcome. Traders will then be paid out or required to pay based on their positions in this market.
Several factors could significantly impact this market. Changes in long-range weather forecasts for Texas in October 2026 are a primary driver, as extreme heat or cold will substantially increase demand. Major economic shifts affecting industrial activity or population growth in Texas could also play a role. Additionally, policy changes related to energy production, conservation, or grid infrastructure could influence expectations. Unexpected events like significant power plant outages or disruptions to fuel supplies could create volatility in this market.
