These markets track specific combinations of month-over-month changes in both headline and core Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September 2026. Contracts pay out only if both headline and core CPI meet their respective percentage thresholds exactly as defined in each market.
Contracts resolve to Yes only if all specified conditions for both headline and core CPI changes in September 2026 are met simultaneously. Headline CPI refers to the month-over-month percent change in CPI-U: All Items, while core CPI refers to the month-over-month percent change in CPI-U: All Items Less Food and Energy. Each component is resolved according to the ECONSTAT ruleset, using the first officially released value. If any single component fails to meet its condition or becomes impossible, the entire contract resolves to No immediately. All conditions must be satisfied within the specified September 2026 time period.
Currently, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than many traditional analyst forecasts. While many economists predict a continued gradual decline in inflation, this market suggests a wider range of potential outcomes is possible. The implied probabilities on Kalshi incorporate a diverse set of information and beliefs, potentially capturing factors not fully accounted for in standard economic models. It’s important to remember that prediction markets represent a collective intelligence, aggregating insights from a wide array of participants, which can sometimes diverge from consensus analyst expectations.
On Kalshi, this market is priced through a continuous double auction, meaning traders can buy and sell contracts representing different CPI outcomes at any time. The price of each contract reflects the market’s collective assessment of the probability of that outcome occurring. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust accordingly, providing a dynamic and real-time indication of market expectations. The market depth and bid-ask spread can also offer insights into the level of confidence traders have in their predictions.
Several key signals and events could significantly influence this market. Unexpected shifts in energy prices, geopolitical instability, or major changes in supply chain dynamics could all impact inflation expectations. Furthermore, statements from the Federal Reserve regarding monetary policy, particularly concerning interest rate adjustments, will be closely watched. Stronger-than-expected or weaker-than-expected economic data releases, such as employment figures or GDP growth, could also cause substantial movement in the price of contracts within this market. Any surprise economic shocks could quickly alter the probabilities assigned to different CPI outcomes.
