Resolves Dec 31, 2026
$
This market tracks whether the World Health Organization will declare a plague pandemic—specifically relating to *Yersinia pestis* or pneumonic plague—before the end of 2026. Currently, Polymarket gives a 1.8% probability to this outcome. The market resolves based on official communications from the World Health Organization, with the primary resolution source being their official statements and reports. Traders should closely watch for any WHO updates regarding potential outbreaks, particularly as we approach December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, the deadline for resolution as defined in the market rules.
This market will resolve to "Yes" if the World Health Organization explicitly characterizes plague, Yersinia pestis, pneumonic plague, or any plague outbreak as a "pandemic" in an official public communication between market creation and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". An explicit characterization includes official WHO statements, reports, press briefings, or publications that clearly describe the disease or outbreak as a "pandemic". A Public Health Emergency of International Concern alone will not qualify unless it is also described as a pandemic. The primary resolution source for this market will be official WHO communications; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
Currently, prediction market odds offer a distinct perspective compared to traditional analyst forecasts regarding the potential for a plague pandemic in 2026. While expert opinions vary, this market aggregates the wisdom of the crowd, reflecting a real-time assessment of risk. It’s important to note that analysts may focus on different factors—such as public health infrastructure or vaccine development—while the market incorporates a broader range of information and potential unforeseen circumstances. This provides a unique data point for evaluating the overall probability of this event occurring.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell contracts representing their belief about whether a plague pandemic will occur in 2026. The price of a contract reflects the probability of the event happening, with higher prices indicating a greater perceived likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market price is determined by supply and demand; if more people believe a pandemic is likely, they will buy contracts, driving up the price, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
This market resolves around Jan 1, 2027, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Resolution will depend on whether a plague pandemic, as defined by major public health organizations, is officially declared in 2026. The determination will be based on evidence from recognized sources like the World Health Organization and national health agencies. The market will then settle based on whether the conditions for a pandemic have been met according to these established definitions and reporting standards.
Several signals or events could significantly impact this market. A confirmed outbreak of plague in a densely populated area would likely cause a substantial increase in the market price. Conversely, successful vaccine trials or advancements in antibiotic treatments could lower the perceived risk. Major reports from public health organizations assessing the global risk of plague, or changes in international travel restrictions, could also influence trading activity. Unexpected environmental factors, such as climate events impacting rodent populations, could also move this market as traders react to new information.
