This market tracks the average real-time electricity price at the PJM Western Hub over a specific week in 2026. The outcome depends on whether this average exceeds various price thresholds, reflecting potential energy market stress or surplus conditions during that period.
The market resolves based on the all-hours average real-time power price at PJM Western Hub for the week ending October 23, 2026. The relevant period runs from October 16, 2026 at 5:00 PM EDT to October 23, 2026 at 5:00 PM EDT, including the start time but excluding the end time. Prices are drawn from PJM Data Miner 2’s verified hourly real-time total Locational Marginal Prices (LMPs), with intervals aligned to Eastern-time start times. The resolution uses a simple average of all applicable hourly prices, including any negative prices, rounded to two decimal places with exact halves rounded away from zero. If the average equals the threshold, the market resolves to No. Trading closes on October 23, 2026 at 4:59 PM EDT, and the final delivery interval is included in calculations. Only the first published prices are used, with later corrections considered only if issued before expiration and accepted by the Exchange as material error corrections. Unverified, estimated, indicative, and forecast prices are excluded. Missing data points are not filled in; if at least 95% of required intervals are available, the average is calculated from the available prices. If fewer than 95% of intervals are available, the market resolves only if the available data conclusively determines the outcome; otherwise, it settles at the Exchange-determined last fair price under the full rules.
Currently, it's difficult to directly compare the predictions within this market to external analyst forecasts. While analysts provide price predictions for PJM power, their methodologies and timeframes may differ from the dynamic, real-time assessment reflected in prediction market prices. It’s important to remember that prediction markets aggregate the wisdom of the crowd, potentially incorporating a wider range of information and perspectives than a single analyst report. Examining the difference between this market’s implied price and those published by energy sector analysts can reveal interesting insights into market expectations.
On Kalshi, this market is priced through a continuous double auction, meaning buyers and sellers submit bids and offers, and trades occur when they match. The price reflects the probability of the average PJM Western Hub real-time power price falling within specific ranges during Week 43. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders are incentivized to provide accurate assessments of the future price, as their profits depend on correctly predicting the outcome. The market’s price movements are driven by supply and demand, responding to new information and changing market sentiment regarding energy prices.
This market resolves around Oct 23, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The final settlement will be based on the average real-time power price for Week 43 in the PJM Western Hub, as reported by an established energy data provider. Traders will then receive payouts based on their positions and the actual outcome. It’s important to monitor news and data releases related to PJM power generation and demand leading up to the resolution date to understand potential influences on the final price.
Several factors could significantly impact the PJM power price market. Unexpected changes in weather patterns, particularly extreme temperatures driving increased demand for heating or cooling, are key catalysts. Major disruptions to power generation, such as plant outages or fuel supply issues, could also cause price fluctuations. Furthermore, shifts in natural gas prices – a primary fuel source for many power plants – and broader economic conditions influencing energy demand can move this market. Regulatory announcements or changes in grid operator policies related to PJM could also introduce volatility.
