This event tracks the average real-time electricity price at a specific regional hub over a defined week. The outcome depends on whether this average exceeds various price thresholds, reflecting potential stress or surplus conditions in the local power grid during that period.
All markets resolve based on the simple average of hourly real-time power prices at PJM AEP-Dayton Hub for the week ending October 23, 2026, measured from October 16, 2026 at 5:00 PM EDT to October 23, 2026 at 5:00 PM EDT. The average includes all applicable hourly prices, positive or negative, and is rounded to two decimal places with exact halves rounded away from zero; equality with any threshold resolves to 'No'. Data comes from PJM Data Miner 2’s verified hourly real-time total Locational Marginal Prices (LMPs), counting repeated daylight-saving hours separately. Trading closes on October 23, 2026 at 4:59 PM EDT, and the final delivery interval is included in calculations. Only the first published prices are used, with later corrections considered only if accepted by the Exchange as material error corrections before expiration. Unverified, estimated, indicative, or forecast prices are excluded. Missing data points are not filled in; if at least 95% of intervals have data, the average is calculated from available prices. If less than 95% of intervals are available, the market resolves only if the available data conclusively determines the outcome; otherwise, it settles at the Exchange-determined last fair price.
Currently, it’s important to note that analyst forecasts for regional power prices are varied, with estimates differing based on weather predictions, fuel costs, and anticipated demand. This market allows for a different form of forecasting – a collective intelligence approach where traders weigh these factors and express their beliefs through their trades. Comparing the implied probabilities from this market to those presented in energy sector reports can offer insights into whether the crowd anticipates higher or lower prices than professional analysts. It’s a dynamic comparison, as both market prices and analyst opinions evolve over time.
On Kalshi, this market is priced using a continuous double auction, meaning buyers and sellers submit bids and offers, and trades occur when there’s a match. The price reflects the market’s expectation of the average real-time power price at the AEP-Dayton Hub during Week 43. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders are incentivized to provide accurate predictions, as profitable trades are made by correctly anticipating the eventual outcome. The market depth and order book display provide transparency into the current supply and demand for contracts at various price levels, giving participants a clear view of market sentiment.
This market resolves around Oct 23, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The final price will be based on the average of the real-time hourly power prices at the PJM AEP-Dayton Hub during the specified week. The resolution will reflect the officially reported data from PJM, the regional transmission organization. Traders will then be paid out based on whether their predictions aligned with the actual average power price during that period, as determined by the publicly available data.
Several factors could significantly influence the price in this market. Unexpected changes in weather patterns, particularly extreme temperatures driving increased demand for heating or cooling, are key catalysts. Significant fluctuations in natural gas prices, a primary fuel source for power generation in the region, would also likely move the market. Additionally, any unplanned outages at major power plants or transmission infrastructure could impact supply and lead to price increases. Finally, announcements regarding energy policy or regulatory changes could introduce uncertainty and affect trading activity in this market.
