Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the dashboard for the Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner by-election tracks real-time odds and historical price movements for each candidate competing in this race. The interface displays current market prices, 24-hour trading volume, and a complete record of how trader sentiment has shifted since the market opened. This live data reflects the collective assessment of prediction market participants as they weigh candidate viability, campaign momentum, and emerging political developments. The dashboard makes it easy to monitor which contenders traders favor and how confidence levels evolve as the election approaches.

Prediction markets and traditional polls often diverge because they measure different things. Polls capture voter sentiment at a single moment, while this market aggregates real-money bets from traders who have financial incentive to forecast accurately. Traders incorporate polling data, campaign news, and their own judgment into prices. When polls and market odds align, it suggests broad consensus; when they diverge, the market may be pricing in factors polls haven't yet captured, such as late-breaking developments or differential turnout expectations. Comparing the two provides a richer picture of the race.

On Polymarket, traders buy and sell shares representing each candidate's probability of winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each share reflects the market's implied odds: a share trading at 0.65 means the market assigns roughly a 65% chance to that outcome. Prices adjust continuously as new trades occur, allowing the market to respond instantly to news, campaign events, and shifting expectations. Liquidity and trading volume influence how quickly prices move and how tight the bid-ask spread remains, making active markets more responsive to information.

This market resolves around Jul 16, 2026, once the by-election concludes and results are verified against credible public sources. The winning candidate—the individual who receives the most votes and is declared elected to the Police and Crime Commissioner role—determines the outcome. Resolution occurs after official results are confirmed and any recount or legal challenges are resolved. Traders should monitor local election authorities and news coverage for final confirmation before the market settles.

Several catalysts could shift odds significantly. Campaign announcements, endorsements from prominent local or national figures, and media coverage of candidate records or policy positions often trigger price swings. Polling releases—whether showing momentum for a frontrunner or a surprise surge by a challenger—typically drive trading activity. Candidate gaffes, withdrawals, or unexpected controversies can rapidly reprrice the field. Turnout expectations and voter registration trends also influence trader positioning. As election day approaches, final polls and early voting data tend to narrow uncertainty and stabilize prices around the most likely outcome.
