Description

This market will resolve to "Up" if the official Nikkei 225 Index closing price for Nikkei 225 (NIK) on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 is higher than the official Nikkei 225 Index closing price for NIK on the most recent prior trading day. This market will resolve to "Down" if the official Nikkei 225 Index closing price for Nikkei 225 (NIK) on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 is lower than the official Nikkei 225 Index closing price for NIK on the most recent prior trading day. E.g., ordinarily, a market on Monday would refer to the previous Friday for its most recent closing price, unless that Friday were a market holiday, in which case it would refer to Thursday, or the next most recent trading day. If the two specified closing prices are exactly equal, this market will resolve 50-50. Note that all figures will be rounded to the nearest cent using standard rounding. If NIK does not trade at all during the regular session, the market will resolve 50-50. If either of the relevant days are shortened (for example, due to a market holiday schedule), the official closing price published by Nikkei 225 Index for that shortened session will still be used for resolution. If either of the relevant days have no official closing price (for example, due to a trading halt into the market close, system issue, delisting, or other disruption), the market will use the last valid on-exchange trade price of the regular session as the effective closing price. The resolution source for this market is the Wall Street Journal, specifically the Close values published by the WSJ under "Historical Prices". Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Nikkei 225 daily movement market dashboard tracks real-time odds and historical price data for whether Japan's flagship stock index will close higher or lower on July 8. The interface displays current implied probabilities for each outcome, allowing traders to monitor shifting sentiment as new economic data, earnings reports, or geopolitical developments emerge. This dashboard also shows trading volume and depth, helping participants gauge liquidity and conviction behind each side of the prediction.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional analyst forecasts because they aggregate real-time trader conviction rather than periodic published estimates. While equity analysts may issue quarterly or annual outlooks, this market reflects continuous reassessment of near-term index direction. Traders incorporate breaking news, overnight global market moves, and intraday momentum faster than formal research updates. Comparing the implied probability here to consensus economist views on Japanese economic conditions can reveal whether the crowd is pricing in more or less optimism than the Street's baseline.

On Polymarket, traders set the odds through an automated market maker mechanism, where buying shares of either outcome adjusts the price in real time. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each share represents a claim on one yen of payout if that outcome occurs, so the current price directly reflects the crowd's estimated probability. As new information surfaces—earnings surprises, central bank signals, or broader Asia-Pacific market moves—traders adjust their positions, pushing prices up or down and revealing updated market consensus on the Nikkei's direction.

This market resolves around Jul 8, 2026, once the trading day concludes and the Nikkei 225's final closing level is confirmed. The outcome is determined by whether the index closes above or below its opening level on that date, verified against credible public sources including the Japan Exchange Group and major financial data providers. Traders holding shares of the winning outcome receive their payout automatically upon resolution.

Key catalysts include Bank of Japan policy announcements, Japanese inflation or employment data, and overnight moves in U.S. equity futures and Treasury yields, which often set the tone for Asian markets at the open. Corporate earnings surprises from major Nikkei constituents, geopolitical developments affecting trade sentiment, and currency fluctuations in the yen can also shift trader positioning. Technical levels and momentum from prior sessions may influence intraday trading, while any unexpected global financial stress or risk-off sentiment could trigger sharp repricing in either direction before the close.
