This market resolves "YES" if the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA APHIS) has confirmed New World screwworm (NWS) animal cases in a number of distinct U.S. states equal to or greater than the number specified in the title, counting states that have at least one case with a Confirmed Date on or before August 31, 2026. A state is counted once it has at least one confirmed animal case, and it continues to count even if all of its cases are later marked inactive. "State" means one of the 50 U.S. states; the District of Columbia and U.S. territories are excluded. The count includes cases in any animal (livestock, pets, or wildlife/feral); fly-trap detections and human cases are excluded. The resolution source is the official USDA APHIS confirmed-detections dashboard: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/animals/animal-health/livestock-and-poultry-disease/current-status/us-confirmed-cases-new-world — read as of its 6:00 p.m. ET update on September 3, 2026, to allow for confirmation lag on late-August cases. If the dashboard page is unavailable at the time of resolution, a consensus of credible reporting will be used. As of the July 5, 2026 update, cases had been confirmed in 2 states (Texas and New Mexico).

Prediction market odds on this event reflect aggregated trader expectations about screwworm spread, informed by agricultural reports, pest management data, and epidemiological trends. Unlike spot prices tied to commodities or assets, these odds represent probabilistic forecasts of a future outcome. Comparing this market to traditional analyst predictions or government pest surveillance estimates can reveal whether traders are pricing in more optimistic or pessimistic scenarios than official channels suggest. The gap between market odds and expert forecasts often signals where information asymmetry or disagreement exists.
On Limitless, this market is priced through continuous order-book mechanics, where traders buy and sell shares corresponding to different outcome ranges. On Limitless, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each outcome reflects the collective willingness of participants to bet on that scenario, with higher prices indicating stronger conviction. As new data on screwworm detections emerges, traders adjust their positions, moving prices in real time. The platform's matching engine ensures transparent price discovery and tight spreads, enabling efficient risk transfer among participants tracking this agricultural threat.
This market resolves around Sep 4, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the final count of U.S. states with verified New World screwworm reports is available from credible public sources. The resolution hinges on official documentation and pest surveillance data released by agricultural and health authorities. Traders holding positions aligned with the actual state count at that time will receive payouts proportional to their shares. Until resolution, prices will fluctuate as reports accumulate and expectations shift.
Several catalysts could shift prices significantly. New confirmed screwworm detections in previously unaffected states would likely increase odds for higher outcome ranges. Conversely, successful containment efforts or the absence of new cases in high-risk regions could lower expectations. Seasonal factors, livestock movement patterns, and border control measures also influence transmission risk. Media coverage of outbreaks, USDA alerts, and veterinary reports serve as real-time signals that traders monitor. Weather patterns affecting insect survival and breeding cycles represent another key variable shaping market sentiment through August 2026.
