This market will resolve according to the total number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.5 or higher that occur anywhere on Earth between September 28, 2026, 12:00 AM ET and October 4, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program, with the minimum magnitude set to 5.5 and the date parameters set to the relevant dates for this market's timeframe (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/). If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until 48 hours after the market's closing time, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that time, this market will resolve according to the data published at that time. This market may not resolve until the timeframe of this market has concluded. If a qualifying earthquake has been recorded on the final day, this market may remain open for 24 hours to allow for revisions to the recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data. If no earthquake data for this market's timeframe has been published on the resolution source by 48 hours after the market's closing time, this market will resolve to the lowest bracket.

Comparing prediction market odds to analyst forecasts for the number of significant earthquakes requires looking at expert opinions from seismological organizations and geological surveys. While analysts often provide probabilistic forecasts based on historical data and tectonic activity, this market reflects the collective judgment of a diverse group of traders. Currently, the market suggests a certain likelihood of various earthquake counts, and it's valuable to see how these probabilities align with, or diverge from, the expectations of scientific experts in the field. The question is whether the wisdom of the crowd will prove more accurate than traditional forecasting methods.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where participants buy and sell shares representing their belief in different outcomes. The price of each share reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust predictions in real-time, offering a forward-looking assessment of the potential earthquake count.
This market resolves around Oct 5, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the resolution will be based on data from established earthquake monitoring agencies, such as the United States Geological Survey (USGS) or similar international organizations. The final count of earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.5 or higher that occurred between September 28th and October 4th will determine the winning outcome in this market. The data will be independently verified to ensure accuracy and transparency.
Several signals or events could significantly move this market before Oct 5, 2026. A major earthquake occurring in a highly populated area, even if it's the only one, could shift the odds towards a higher earthquake count. Conversely, a period of prolonged seismic inactivity could push the market towards a lower count. News reports about increased or decreased tectonic stress in known earthquake zones could also influence trader sentiment. Additionally, any updates or revised forecasts from leading seismological agencies might prompt adjustments in the market's pricing, reflecting the evolving understanding of earthquake risk.
