Description

This market will resolve to "Up" if the official Hang Seng Index closing price for Hang Seng (HSI) on Thursday, June 4, 2026 is higher than the official Hang Seng Index closing price for HSI on the most recent prior trading day. This market will resolve to "Down" if the official Hang Seng Index closing price for Hang Seng (HSI) on Thursday, June 4, 2026 is lower than the official Hang Seng Index closing price for HSI on the most recent prior trading day. E.g., ordinarily, a market on Monday would refer to the previous Friday for its most recent closing price, unless that Friday were a market holiday, in which case it would refer to Thursday, or the next most recent trading day. If the two specified closing prices are exactly equal, this market will resolve 50-50. Note that all figures will be rounded to the nearest cent using standard rounding. If HSI does not trade at all during the regular session, the market will resolve 50-50. If either of the relevant days are shortened (for example, due to a market holiday schedule), the official closing price published by Hang Seng Index for that shortened session will still be used for resolution. If either of the relevant days have no official closing price (for example, due to a trading halt into the market close, system issue, delisting, or other disruption), the market will use the last valid on-exchange trade price of the regular session as the effective closing price. The resolution source for this market is the Wall Street Journal, specifically the Close values published by the WSJ under "Historical Prices". Frequently asked questions

Prediction market odds on Polymarket reflect real-money trader conviction and often diverge from traditional analyst consensus. While sell-side equity strategists may publish directional views on Hong Kong equities based on macroeconomic models, prediction markets incorporate live sentiment and tail-risk pricing. Analysts typically issue longer-term outlooks; this market isolates a single-day outcome, making direct comparison difficult. However, if analysts collectively expect weakness in Chinese equities heading into June 4, you may see that reflected in lower odds for an HSI up move. Prediction markets often price faster and more dynamically than analyst revisions, especially around earnings surprises or policy announcements.

On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. On Polymarket, this event is priced as a binary contract: traders buy or sell shares representing an HSI up move or down move on June 4. Each outcome share trades between 0 and 100 cents, with the price directly reflecting the market's implied probability. Liquidity and trading volume determine how tight the bid-ask spread is; higher volume typically means tighter spreads and easier entry and exit. Prices update continuously as new information arrives—economic data from China, Fed decisions, or regional geopolitical shifts can move the contract sharply. The final settlement price depends on the official HSI closing level on June 4 relative to the previous close.

The market resolves at Jun 4, 2026. Resolution is determined by the official closing level of the Hang Seng Index on June 4. If the HSI closes higher than the previous trading day's close, the up outcome resolves to yes; if it closes lower, the down outcome resolves to yes. The market uses the primary HSI reference price published by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) at the end of the regular trading session. Any corporate actions, dividends, or index methodology changes are already reflected in the official closing price, so no manual adjustments are needed. Once the market resolves, winnings are credited to traders holding the correct outcome.

Several catalysts could shift HSI odds before June 4. Chinese economic data—industrial production, retail sales, or manufacturing PMI—often drive Hong Kong equities. Federal Reserve policy signals and US Treasury yields influence risk appetite for Asian assets. Earnings announcements from major HSI constituents like Alibaba, Tencent, or ICBC can trigger sharp moves. Geopolitical developments, trade tensions, or regulatory announcements from Beijing affect sentiment toward Chinese stocks. Currency movements, particularly USD-CNY strength or weakness, also matter for multinational HSI companies. Corporate M&A news, dividend announcements, or index rebalancing events may create directional pressure. Real estate sector updates and property developer credit events remain sensitive given their HSI weighting.
