This market will resolve to "Up" if the official Hang Seng Index closing price for Hang Seng (HSI) on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 is higher than the official Hang Seng Index closing price for HSI on the most recent prior trading day. This market will resolve to "Down" if the official Hang Seng Index closing price for Hang Seng (HSI) on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 is lower than the official Hang Seng Index closing price for HSI on the most recent prior trading day. E.g., ordinarily, a market on Monday would refer to the previous Friday for its most recent closing price, unless that Friday were a market holiday, in which case it would refer to Thursday, or the next most recent trading day. If the two specified closing prices are exactly equal, this market will resolve 50-50. Note that all figures will be rounded to the nearest cent using standard rounding. If HSI does not trade at all during the regular session, the market will resolve 50-50. If either of the relevant days are shortened (for example, due to a market holiday schedule), the official closing price published by Hang Seng Index for that shortened session will still be used for resolution. If either of the relevant days have no official closing price (for example, due to a trading halt into the market close, system issue, delisting, or other disruption), the market will use the last valid on-exchange trade price of the regular session as the effective closing price. The resolution source for this market is the Wall Street Journal, specifically the Close values published by the WSJ under "Historical Prices". Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional analyst consensus because they reflect real-money incentives and continuous price discovery rather than point-in-time surveys. While equity analysts may issue directional calls on the Hang Seng's medium-term trajectory, this market isolates a single day's outcome, creating a different information set. Traders here incorporate intraday volatility expectations, overnight economic data, and geopolitical risk in ways that spot forecasts may not capture. Comparing the implied probability here to published analyst sentiment can reveal whether the market is pricing in tail risks or complacency that consensus views have missed.
On Polymarket, traders set the odds by buying and selling shares representing each outcome—HSI Up or HSI Down on July 8. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each share reflects the collective belief in that outcome's likelihood, with the two probabilities summing to 100 percent. As new information arrives or sentiment shifts, traders adjust their positions, and the market price updates in real time. This continuous auction mechanism ensures that the odds you see represent the marginal trader's current assessment of directional risk for that specific date.
This market resolves around Jul 8, 2026, once the Hang Seng's closing level for July 8 is verified against credible public sources. The outcome is binary: if the HSI closes above its opening level that day, the Up outcome wins; if it closes below, the Down outcome wins. Resolution typically occurs within hours of market close, once official data is published and confirmed. Traders should monitor for any exchange holidays or data delays that could affect settlement timing.
Major catalysts for this market include overnight economic releases from China and the broader Asia-Pacific region, central bank communications, and geopolitical developments affecting risk sentiment. Earnings surprises from HSI-constituent companies, currency movements in the Chinese yuan, and shifts in US equity futures can all influence opening sentiment. Intraday volatility often spikes around data releases or policy announcements. Traders should watch for any unexpected macro shocks or corporate news that could shift the balance between bullish and bearish positioning heading into July 8's close.
