This market will resolve to "Up" if the official Hang Seng Index closing price for Hang Seng (HSI) on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 is higher than the official Hang Seng Index closing price for HSI on the most recent prior trading day. This market will resolve to "Down" if the official Hang Seng Index closing price for Hang Seng (HSI) on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 is lower than the official Hang Seng Index closing price for HSI on the most recent prior trading day. E.g., ordinarily, a market on Monday would refer to the previous Friday for its most recent closing price, unless that Friday were a market holiday, in which case it would refer to Thursday, or the next most recent trading day. If the two specified closing prices are exactly equal, this market will resolve 50-50. Note that all figures will be rounded to the nearest cent using standard rounding. If HSI does not trade at all during the regular session, the market will resolve 50-50. If either of the relevant days are shortened (for example, due to a market holiday schedule), the official closing price published by Hang Seng Index for that shortened session will still be used for resolution. If either of the relevant days have no official closing price (for example, due to a trading halt into the market close, system issue, delisting, or other disruption), the market will use the last valid on-exchange trade price of the regular session as the effective closing price. The resolution source for this market is the Wall Street Journal, specifically the Close values published by the WSJ under "Historical Prices". Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional analyst forecasts because they aggregate real-money bets from many participants rather than relying on a small group of experts. Traders in this market face direct financial incentives to forecast accurately, which can surface insights that consensus analyst views miss. However, both approaches reflect available data at the time of prediction. Comparing this market's odds to published analyst sentiment on Hong Kong equities and broader market conditions can reveal where professional and crowd-based forecasters disagree on the Hang Seng's near-term direction.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker system. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each share represents a claim on one outcome—HSI up or down—and the ratio of shares bought and sold determines the probability displayed. Prices adjust continuously as new trades flow in, reflecting updated expectations about the index's close. The current odds represent the marginal trader's assessment, meaning the last buyer or seller's conviction about which direction is more likely on the specified date.
This market resolves around Jul 7, 2026, once the Hang Seng's closing level for that day is verified against credible public sources. The outcome is determined by whether the index closes higher or lower than its previous session close. No ambiguity exists in the settlement because the HSI's official closing price is published by the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing and widely reported. Traders can expect final resolution shortly after the market close in Hong Kong on that date.
Major catalysts that could shift odds include corporate earnings announcements, macroeconomic data releases from China and Hong Kong, central bank policy signals, and geopolitical developments affecting regional sentiment. Currency movements, particularly the Hong Kong dollar and yuan, often influence HSI positioning. Global equity market momentum, especially overnight moves in US and European indices, can set the tone for Hong Kong trading. Technical levels and options expiry dates may also trigger algorithmic trading. Traders monitor these signals continuously to adjust their positions ahead of the July 7 close.
