This market will resolve to "Up" if the official Hang Seng Index closing price for Hang Seng (HSI) on Monday, July 20, 2026 is higher than the official Hang Seng Index closing price for HSI on the most recent prior trading day. This market will resolve to "Down" if the official Hang Seng Index closing price for Hang Seng (HSI) on Monday, July 20, 2026 is lower than the official Hang Seng Index closing price for HSI on the most recent prior trading day. E.g., ordinarily, a market on Monday would refer to the previous Friday for its most recent closing price, unless that Friday were a market holiday, in which case it would refer to Thursday, or the next most recent trading day. If the two specified closing prices are exactly equal, this market will resolve 50-50. Note that all figures will be rounded to the nearest cent using standard rounding. If HSI does not trade at all during the regular session, the market will resolve 50-50. If either of the relevant days are shortened (for example, due to a market holiday schedule), the official closing price published by Hang Seng Index for that shortened session will still be used for resolution. If either of the relevant days have no official closing price (for example, due to a trading halt into the market close, system issue, delisting, or other disruption), the market will use the last valid on-exchange trade price of the regular session as the effective closing price. The resolution source for this market is the Wall Street Journal, specifically the Close values published by the WSJ under "Historical Prices". Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional analyst forecasts because they reflect real-money incentives rather than opinion surveys. Traders betting on this market face direct financial consequences for accuracy, which can sharpen price discovery around the Hang Seng's direction. Analysts may issue directional guidance based on technical or fundamental analysis, but prediction markets aggregate dispersed information from many participants with skin in the game. Over time, markets tend to incorporate breaking news and shifting economic data faster than consensus estimates update. Comparing the two reveals whether professional forecasters and market participants are aligned or diverging on HSI momentum.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that converts order flow into real-time probabilities. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders buy or sell shares representing each outcome, and the platform's pricing algorithm adjusts the odds based on supply and demand. Higher trading volume typically narrows the spread between bid and ask prices, making it cheaper to enter or exit a position. The current price of each outcome reflects the collective assessment of all market participants weighted by their trading activity. Settlement occurs when the event concludes and the outcome is verified, at which point winning shares are redeemed at full value.
This market resolves around Jul 20, 2026, once the trading day closes and the Hang Seng Index's final direction is confirmed. The outcome is determined by whether the HSI closes above or below its opening level on that date, verified against credible public financial reporting. No ambiguity exists in the resolution criteria since the index's closing price is a matter of public record published by the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing. Traders holding winning shares at resolution receive their payout automatically. The market remains open for trading until the close of the Hong Kong market on the specified date.
Major economic data releases, central bank announcements, and geopolitical developments can shift odds in this market significantly. Hong Kong and mainland China economic indicators—such as manufacturing PMI, trade figures, or inflation data—often drive HSI sentiment. Global risk appetite, US Federal Reserve policy signals, and currency movements also influence the index's direction. Corporate earnings surprises or sector-specific news can trigger intraday volatility that traders factor into their positions. Market participants watch for any unexpected policy shifts or international tensions that might affect investor confidence in Hong Kong equities ahead of the July 20 close.
