Intro

This market tracks whether the Federal Reserve will raise the upper bound of the target federal funds rate at any point during the period between September 17, 2026, and the completion of the December 2026 meeting. Currently, Polymarket gives an 86.0% probability to the outcome of another Fed rate hike in 2026. The resolution source for this market is the official Federal Reserve monetary policy page: https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/openmarket.htm. Traders should particularly watch the Federal Reserve’s December 8-9, 2026 meeting, as any rate hike announced during or immediately following this meeting will determine the market’s outcome.

Polymarket

This market will resolve to “Yes” if the upper bound of the target federal funds rate is increased at any point between September 17, 2026 and the completion of the Fed's December 2026 meeting, currently scheduled for December 8 to 9, 2026, inclusive of any rate hike announced as a result of the December meeting. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. Any change to the target federal funds rate announced at the conclusion of the September 15 to 16, 2026 FOMC meeting will not count toward this market. Emergency rate hikes announced on or after September 17, 2026 will qualify. This market may not resolve to "No" until the Fed has released its rate change decision following its December meeting. The primary resolution source for this market will be the official website of the Federal Reserve (https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/openmarket.htm), however a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.

Currently, prediction market odds offer a distinct perspective compared to traditional analyst forecasts regarding the likelihood of a Fed rate hike in 2026. While many economists predict a pause or even potential rate cuts, this market reflects a different level of conviction. It’s important to remember that prediction markets aggregate the wisdom of the crowd, potentially incorporating information and perspectives not fully captured in standard economic models. This provides a valuable, alternative data point for assessing the probability of this economic event.

On Polymarket, this market is priced using a continuous double auction, meaning traders can buy and sell contracts representing their belief about whether a Fed rate hike will occur in 2026. The price of a 'Yes' contract reflects the probability of a hike, while a 'No' contract represents the probability of no hike. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the market. This dynamic pricing mechanism ensures the market odds are constantly updated based on new information and sentiment.

This market resolves around Dec 10, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, resolution will depend on whether the Federal Reserve announces an increase to the federal funds rate target at any point during the 2026 calendar year. The resolution will be based on official statements released by the Federal Reserve and reported by major financial news outlets. The outcome will be a simple binary determination: either a rate hike occurred, or it did not.

Several key signals and events could significantly impact this market. Unexpected inflation data, particularly if it consistently exceeds the Federal Reserve’s target, could increase expectations of a rate hike. Conversely, signs of a weakening economy, such as rising unemployment or slowing GDP growth, could push odds lower. Statements from Federal Reserve officials regarding future monetary policy will also be closely watched. Geopolitical events and global economic conditions could also introduce volatility and influence trading activity in this market.
