Description

This group of markets asks whether OpenAI or Anthropic will announce they have achieved recursive self-improvement – a capability where their AI can autonomously improve its own capabilities – by a specified date. The markets focus on a public announcement of the capability, not necessarily a full product release or independent verification.

PredictionHero - Resolution Divergence Alerts (RDA)

Divergence Detected

Issue: The markets have differing deadlines for resolution, creating a timing discrepancy.Hero tip: Pay attention to the different deadlines. Polymarket markets resolve much sooner than Kalshi markets.

Critical divergence points:

  • Polymarket: Resolves 'Yes' if an announcement is made by October 31, 2026, or December 31, 2026. "Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No"."
  • Kalshi: Resolves 'Yes' if an announcement is made before January 1, 2027, January 1, 2028, or January 1, 2029. Offers multiple resolution dates.
Our PredictionHero Resolution Divergence Alerts (RDA) are there to help users identify potential differences across platforms. They do not replace or supersede the official rules and description of any prediction market. Users are solely responsible for reviewing and understanding the applicable rules and resolution criteria before placing any trade or bet. If you notice a potential inconsistency, discrepancy, or error in an alert, please report it to our team so we can review and improve the accuracy of our data.

Polymarket

This market will resolve to "Yes" if OpenAI or Anthropic, or an official representative of either company, announces that the company has achieved recursive self-improvement by 11:59 PM ET on the specified date. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". Recursive self-improvement means a capability, as described in the company's announcement, in which the company's AI autonomously conducts the research and development needed to materially improve the general capabilities of its most capable or near-frontier AI systems, or to produce a more capable successor, with the improved system able to drive further such improvements. Humans may set high-level goals and provide resources, oversight, and approval, but must not supply the substantive research choices or the technical solution. Improvements that are toy, narrow, sandboxed, proof-of-concept, or limited to prompts, skills, or benchmark scores will not qualify. A qualifying announcement must describe the capability as currently achieved in an official capacity. Statements that AI is assisting, accelerating, or writing code for the company's research, statements of future plans or expectations, speculation, interviewer characterizations, leaks, model outputs, and third-party claims will not qualify. A public release, a named model, a technical demonstration, and independent verification are not required. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from OpenAI and Anthropic or their official representatives; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.

Kalshi

The market resolves to Yes if either OpenAI or Anthropic announces, before January 1, 2029, that it has achieved recursive self-improvement. The announcement must clearly describe an achieved capability where the company's AI autonomously conducts the research and development to materially improve the general capabilities of its most capable or near-frontier AI systems, or produce a more capable successor, with the improved system able to drive further improvements. Such improvements must go beyond toy, narrow, sandboxed, proof-of-concept, prompt, skill, or benchmark-only enhancements. While humans may provide high-level goals, resources, oversight, and approval, they must not supply the substantive research choices or technical solutions. The capability must be affirmatively described as currently achieved in an official company communication or by an executive or research leader speaking about the company's capabilities. Future plans, speculation, offhand remarks, interviewer characterizations, leaks, model outputs, and third-party claims do not qualify. No public release, named model, technical demonstration, or independent verification is required for the market to resolve.

Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi can diverge due to several factors. Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Each platform attracts a different user base with varying risk tolerances and information sets. Trading fees and platform-specific rules can also contribute to price discrepancies. Furthermore, the liquidity and volume on each platform influence price discovery; a larger volume on one platform may lead to a more efficient and accurate price. Currently, Polymarket currently favors Will OpenAI or Anthropic announce recursive self-improvement by December 31, 2026? at 18.0%, while Kalshi leans toward Will OpenAI or Anthropic announces it has achieved recursive self-improvement before Jan 1, 2029? at 75.0%, demonstrating these differing views.

This market resolves around Jan 8, 2029, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The outcome will be determined by whether OpenAI or Anthropic publicly announces that they have achieved recursive self-improvement, meaning the AI system can improve its own code and capabilities without human intervention. The current trading volume is $9,487, reflecting the importance of this potential milestone.

Several signals could significantly impact this market. Major announcements from OpenAI or Anthropic regarding advancements in AI capabilities, particularly those related to self-improvement or autonomous learning, would be key catalysts. Unexpected breakthroughs in AI research, publications of peer-reviewed papers, or demonstrations of advanced AI systems could also shift the odds. Conversely, reports of significant challenges or setbacks in AI development, or regulatory actions impacting AI research, could lower the probability. The 24-hour volume of $2 indicates traders are actively responding to new information as it emerges.
