Resolves Oct 4, 2026
Time left: 05d:00h:21m

This market will resolve according to the total number of transit calls that IMF Portwatch reports for the Strait of Hormuz for all days from September 28, 2026, through October 4, 2026, inclusive. Transit calls include container, dry bulk, roll-on/roll-off, general cargo, and tanker ships. Ships not reported by IMF Portwatch will not be considered. This market will resolve as soon as all relevant data has been published. If the relevant data is not published within 14 calendar days of the specified date, this market will resolve based on the most recent data published up to that point. In case of obvious data integrity issues (i.e., erroneous data), the market may remain open until the end of the third calendar day (ET) after the date on which such data is first released to allow for corrections. Data integrity issues refer only to clerical or other similar errors in the underlying data, and do not include cases where IMF Portwatch differs from alternative sources. Only revisions to previously published data points made before all relevant data has been published will be considered. The resolution source for this market will be IMF Portwatch, specifically the transit calls data published for the Strait of Hormuz at https://portwatch.imf.org/pages/cb5856222a5b4105adc6ee7e880a1730, both in the chart and through downloadable files.

Comparing prediction market odds to sportsbook odds for this type of event is challenging, as sportsbooks rarely offer markets on specific shipping traffic counts. Traditional polls and expert analyses often estimate geopolitical risk and potential disruptions, but rarely provide a precise numerical forecast like this market. While analysts might offer opinions on the likelihood of increased or decreased traffic, this market allows for a more granular and quantifiable prediction. The wisdom of the crowd on Polymarket provides a unique perspective, potentially incorporating information not readily available to traditional forecasting methods.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief about the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will rise. Conversely, if traders become less confident in an outcome, the price will fall. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, creating a real-time forecast of the event's likelihood.
This market resolves around Oct 4, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The number of ships that transit the Strait of Hormuz during the specified week will be determined by data from established maritime tracking services and publicly available shipping data. This data will be assessed to determine the actual number of transits, and that number will be used to determine the winning outcome in this market. The resolution process aims to be objective and based on verifiable information, ensuring a fair and transparent outcome.
Several signals or events could significantly move this market before its resolution. Geopolitical tensions in the region, such as increased military activity or diplomatic incidents, could disrupt shipping routes and impact the number of transits. Major weather events, like severe storms, could also cause delays and alter traffic patterns. Additionally, changes in global oil prices or demand could influence shipping activity. Any news related to tanker attacks, piracy, or changes in maritime regulations would likely have a substantial effect on the market, as traders adjust their predictions based on the evolving risk landscape.
