This market will resolve according to the total number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.5 or higher that occur anywhere on Earth between September 14, 2026, 12:00 AM ET and September 20, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program, with the minimum magnitude set to 5.5 and the date parameters set to the relevant dates for this market's timeframe (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/). If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until 48 hours after the market's closing time, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that time, this market will resolve according to the data published at that time. This market may not resolve until the timeframe of this market has concluded. If a qualifying earthquake has been recorded on the final day, this market may remain open for 24 hours to allow for revisions to the recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data. If no earthquake data for this market's timeframe has been published on the resolution source by 48 hours after the market's closing time, this market will resolve to the lowest bracket.

Currently, the prevailing sentiment in this market suggests a very high probability of a specific earthquake count occurring. This contrasts with typical analyst forecasts, which often rely on historical data and statistical modeling to predict earthquake frequency. However, prediction markets like this one incorporate a wider range of information, including real-time seismic activity and subjective assessments from a diverse group of forecasters. Comparing this market's outcome to expert predictions offers a fascinating insight into the wisdom of the crowd versus traditional analytical approaches to forecasting geological events.
On Polymarket, this market is priced using a continuous double auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief about the likelihood of different earthquake counts. As more shares are bought for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, allowing participants to express their views and profit if their predictions prove accurate. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
This market resolves around Sep 21, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The final count of 5.5 magnitude or greater earthquakes worldwide between September 14th and September 20th, as reported by a reputable seismological agency, will determine the winning outcome. The resolution will be based on publicly available data and established earthquake monitoring standards, ensuring a transparent and objective determination of the result of this market.
Several factors could significantly influence this market before its resolution. An increase in seismic activity, particularly the occurrence of several moderate to strong earthquakes in the days leading up to September 20th, would likely shift the odds. Conversely, a period of relative calm could lower the probability of a higher earthquake count. News reports about unusual geological stress or warnings from seismologists could also impact trading activity. Finally, any revisions to historical earthquake data or changes in monitoring methodologies could potentially affect the perceived likelihood of different outcomes in this market.
